About Organizers:
The Harvard International Arbitration Law Students Association (HIALSA) and the Harvard International Law Journal (HILJ) are delighted to announce their continued collaboration for the 2025–26 academic year. Building on the successful foundation established in 2023, this initiative seeks to promote short-form scholarship in international arbitration by inviting contributions from experienced practitioners and scholars worldwide.
This call for submissions provides a unique opportunity to publish with two leading platforms in the field of international law and arbitration, and to contribute to the evolving global discourse.
Types of Contributions Accepted:
Submissions may fall into one of the following categories:
- Brief Academic Commentary
- Offers description and critical analysis of a relevant issue in commercial or investment arbitration.
- No fixed subject matter criteria — authors are encouraged to explore novel or underexamined issues.
- Decision Analyses
- Provides description and critical assessment of a recent arbitration award or arbitration-related judgment rendered by a state court.
- Should critique and/or explain the relevance of the decision within the broader field of arbitration.
- Regional or Country Highlights
- Presents an overview of recent developments in arbitration within a specific country or region.
- Successful pieces will situate the issue in its local context while outlining implications for the global landscape.
Submission Guidelines:
- Deadline: January 15, 2026 (fixed and final; late submissions will not be considered).
- Eligibility: Authors must have at least five years of post-law-degree professional or academic experience in international arbitration. Submissions from those without this experience will not be considered.
- Length: 500–2,500 words.
- Language: English only.
- Authorship: Individual authorship only; co-authorship is not permitted.
- Citation Style:
- In-text hyperlinks preferred.
- Limit use of footnotes and endnotes.
- References must follow Bluebook (22nd edition) standards.
- Page/paragraph references may be included in-text (e.g., “The Salini tribunal held (11 50–58)…”).

- Submit a completed article in Word format along with the author’s CV.
- Email submissions to: iljonline@mail.law.harvard.edu
- Subject line format: LastName_HIALSA-HILJ
- Example: Menard_HIALSA-HILJ
Please note:
- Receipt of submissions will not be confirmed.
- Feedback will not be provided for articles that are not selected.
- Selected authors will be contacted with details on editing and publication.
Selection & Publication:
- A joint committee of HIALSA and HILJ Online staff (comprised of J.D. and LL.M. candidates) will review submissions. Faculty advisors and peer scholars may also participate in the review process.
- The two best contributions will be featured in:
- The third edition of the HIALSA Arbitration Review (2026)
- The International Arbitration section of HILJ Online
- Winning contributions will be announced in February 2026.
- The HIALSA Arbitration Review (2026) is scheduled for publication in Spring 2026 (subject to change).
Copyright & Publication Rights:
By submitting a contribution, selected authors grant HIALSA and HILJ a perpetual, worldwide, transferable, and irrevocable license to publish, reproduce, distribute, and display the work in any format or medium. This includes:
- Publication through third-party academic or commercial platforms.
- Use by artificial intelligence systems for indexing, analysis, or data-processing.
- Sub-licensing to external partners.
No additional authorization or compensation will be required.
