Call for Papers – IJCL Special Issue on Dignity: Promise and Practice (2026)
The Indian Journal of Constitutional Law (IJCL) also announces its Special Issue on Dignity: Promise and Practice as part of its XIV Volume (2026). This marks the beginning of IJCL’s new format of publishing two issues per volume – a general issue and a themed special issue. The inaugural special issue is dedicated to one of the most profound yet contested constitutional values: dignity.
Theme Note – Dignity: Promise and Practice
This issue builds upon the National Conference on Dignity Law: Promise and Practice (July 5–6, 2025) at NALSAR University of Law. The conference highlighted dignity’s dual role:
- As a constitutional value – anchoring rights adjudication, informing state obligations, and structuring the relationship between individual and state.
- As a lived reality – experienced or denied in material ways, visible in prisons, police stations, welfare systems, and everyday state interactions.
Submissions are invited to interrogate the tension between dignity as a constitutional promise and dignity as a practical reality.
Suggested Areas of Exploration:
- Philosophical foundations of dignity (autonomy, equality, personhood).
- Role of dignity in constitutional interpretation and adjudication.
- Evolution of dignity in Indian jurisprudence and comparative perspectives.
- Dignity in criminal justice (procedural fairness, incarceration, custodial violence).
- Intersectionality: dignity and caste, gender, sexuality, disability, marginalisation.
- Institutional practices and state power shaping dignity.
- Clinical legal education, advocacy, and public engagement.
- Critical perspectives questioning dignity’s rhetorical use.
Interdisciplinary, empirical, critical, and creative approaches are encouraged.
