Call for Papers | University of Glasgow | Conference on Disarmament and International Law | Submit by 30 May 2026

About the University of Glasgow:

The University of Glasgow stands as one of Scotland’s leading international institutions, committed to advancing globally competitive research and fostering a student‑centred learning environment. Its mission extends beyond academia, contributing to Scottish culture, society, the environment, and the national economy.

Concept & Focus:

At a time when the international legal order faces fragmentation and progress on disarmament appears uncertain, this conference seeks to re‑energise dialogue. It will explore how disarmament is envisioned, contested, and shaped in spaces often considered “marginal.” The aim is to highlight the contributions of non‑state actors, social movements, Indigenous communities, and other voices that have historically influenced disarmament but remain underrepresented in mainstream scholarship.

Themes for Discussion:

Participants are invited to engage with diverse perspectives, including:

  • The role of law in peace and anti‑militarist activism.
  • Legal strategies and governance in advancing disarmament.
  • Defining and understanding “the margins” in disarmament discourse.
  • Spatial dimensions of marginality — frontiers, neutral zones, and demilitarised spaces.
  • Identity and marginalisation in disarmament contexts, including race, colonialism, and prejudice.
  • Reviving ideas and concepts sidelined in mainstream disarmament debates.

A field visit to Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park, via Faslane Peace Camp and Naval Base, will conclude the conference. Interested participants should indicate their preference when submitting.

Why Participate?

This conference offers a unique platform to rethink disarmament law from the margins, amplify underrepresented voices, and foster collaboration between scholars, activists, and practitioners. By situating the dialogue in Scotland — a region historically at the forefront of nuclear debates and peace campaigns — the event promises both intellectual depth and practical engagement.
