Conference Synopsis:
Artificial intelligence (AI) represents a transformative technological advancement, delivering benefits across healthcare, creative industries, and industrial efficiency. Yet, its rapid integration into society introduces complex ethical, legal, and governance challenges that demand careful examination and proactive management.
This two-day conference will bring together academics, practitioners, and industry leaders to explore how governance and liability regimes can ensure responsible innovation and fairer AI systems. Discussions will address how AI alters decision-making and information processing, the need for new frameworks to safeguard societal well-being, and the remedies available when safeguards fail or technology malfunctions.
The conference will highlight global and national efforts in AI governance and liability, underscoring the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach to align AI systems with human values and the common good.
Format of the Conference:
- Presentations by leading scholars and practitioners.
- Panel Discussions on governance, liability, and ethical dimensions of AI.
- Interdisciplinary Engagement across law, computer science, philosophy, political science, sociology, and related fields.
Call for Papers – Submission Guidelines:
We invite submissions of abstracts for consideration:
- Abstracts must not exceed 500 words, and should include a short bibliography (maximum 5 references).
- Each submission must be accompanied by a CV of not more than one page.
- Submissions should be sent to trail@nus.edu.sg by 30 April 2026, 11:59 PM Singapore time.
- Authors whose abstracts are selected will be notified by early June 2026.
- Selected papers of the highest quality will be considered for publication in the Singapore Journal of Legal Studies, the flagship peer-reviewed journal of NUS Law.
- Accommodation: NUS Law will cover three nights of hotel stay for one author per selected abstract. Airfare is to be borne by participants.

The conference welcomes theoretical, doctrinal, empirical, and interdisciplinary contributions. Suggested themes include:
- Liability and governance of agentic AI systems
- AI companions, emotional manipulation, and protection of vulnerable users
- AI model welfare, consciousness, and moral status
- Governing compute: infrastructure, sovereignty, and geopolitical competition
- AI-generated evidence, hallucinations, and justice administration
- Comparative AI regulation
- Environmental sustainability and AI
- AI, intellectual property, and creative economies
- Comparative deepfake law and governance of synthetic media
