About Project 39A

Project 39A is a criminal justice research and litigation centre at National Law University, Delhi. Inspired by Article 39A of the Constitution of India, the initiative works at the intersections of research, academia, litigation, legal aid, and criminal justice reform. Its focus areas include:

• Death penalty
• Undertrial incarceration
• Forensics
• Torture
• Mental health

Through its publications, Project 39A aims to foster public scholarship, inform legal debate, support policy development, and encourage critical engagement with contemporary issues in the criminal justice system.

About NLU Delhi

Established in 2008 under the National Law University Act, 2007, NLU Delhi is a premier institution imparting comprehensive and interdisciplinary legal education. Project 39A is one of its flagship centres, dedicated to advancing access to justice and reform in criminal law.

Eligible Contributors

Project 39A welcomes contributions from:

• Lawyers, academics, and researchers
• Law students and journalists
• Practitioners from allied disciplines

Themes for Submission

Submissions may focus on:

• Capital punishment
• Legal aid and access to justice
• Custodial violence and torture
• Mental health and criminal law
• Forensics and evidence
• Broader intersections with criminal justice

Submission Format

• Blogs: 800–1500 words
• Articles: 2500–3000 words
• Language: English
• Formatting: Times New Roman, Size 12, single-spaced, 1-inch margins
• Author Bio: 50–100 words (separate section)
• Author Photograph: Optional but encouraged
• Co-authorship: Permitted up to two authors
• Submissions must be anonymised (no identifying details in the body text)

Submission Process

• All submissions must be made via the “Articles & Blog” section of the Project 39A website

• Deadline: 30 August 2026

Publication & Outreach

Accepted pieces may experience a short delay before publication to manage copy flow. Project 39A actively engages on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, and contributors may be tagged upon publication.
