The NUALS ADR Society (ADRS), founded in 2024, is the University’s official body for advancing alternative dispute resolution. It encourages student participation in prestigious national and international ADR competitions, training programmes, and related events, equipping them with essential skills for the evolving field of dispute resolution. By hosting the second edition of the NUALS Mediation Competition, the Society highlights its commitment to fostering a culture of excellence in ADR and strengthening NUALS’s reputation as a hub for innovative legal education.

About NUALS Mediation Competition (NMC):

The second edition of the NUALS Mediation Competition (NMC), organised by the NUALS ADR Society, underscores the growing importance of mediation as a preferred ADR mechanism. Scheduled with virtual preliminary rounds on January 18, 2026, and in-person advanced rounds on February 15, 2026, the NMC provides a premier platform for aspiring legal professionals to bridge theory and practice. By simulating real-world scenarios, it equips participants with vital skills in negotiation, communication, problem-solving, and creative conflict resolution. Highlighting mediation as a cost-effective alternative to litigation, the competition reflects ADR’s role in easing judicial burdens and supporting business efficiency. With its emphasis on professional networking, the NMC connects students with legal experts and practitioners, enriching their learning and inspiring innovative approaches to dispute resolution within India’s socio-legal framework.

Format of the Competition:

The format of the NUALS Mediation Competition is designed to rigorously test both negotiating pairs and mediators.

  • For Client and Counsel, the competition begins with two online preliminary rounds where each team alternates between representing the requesting and responding parties. Performances are scored cumulatively, and the top 8 teams advance to the online Quarterfinals on January 18, 2026. From there, the top 4 progress to the Semifinals, and the Final round features the top two teams alongside the top two mediators. This structure challenges participants to demonstrate adaptability, negotiation strategies, and effective dispute resolution skills.
  • For Mediators, evaluation focuses on their ability to facilitate sessions, encourage communication, and guide parties toward resolution. Each preliminary round involves two mediators working together, with scoring influenced by their coordination and neutrality. The top 8 mediators qualify for the Quarterfinals, the top 4 move to the Semifinals, and the top 2 mediate the Final session with the finalist negotiating pairs. Success depends on their capacity to manage discussions impartially and drive the mediation process forward.
