About Competition:

The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi, through its Centre for Consumer Protection Law and Policy (CCPLaP), in collaboration with the Orpheus Sabha Foundation, proudly announces the 1st Edition of the NUALS National Policy Drafting Competition.

Theme:

Strengthening Consumer Rights in Insurance
Participants are invited to draft innovative and practical policy proposals addressing consumer protection challenges in India’s insurance sector.

Illustrative sub‑themes include:

  • Embedded insurance & platform‑based risk protection
  • Effectiveness of government insurance schemes
  • Farmer‑centric insurance design for climate/non‑climate risks
  • Finality in insurance adjudication & claim certainty
  • Severability in property insurance (arson/mass violence)
  • Strict liability in aviation insurance
  • Algorithmic & AI‑driven underwriting and claims
  • Climate‑induced disaster insurance & catastrophe fund design
  • Platform‑bundled insurance & competition law
  • Reinsurance, systemic risk concentration & sovereign backstopping

Event Timeline:

  • 15 Dec 2025 – Release of Rulebook, Brochure & Themes
  • 1 Feb 2026 – Last date for Registration
  • 5 Feb 2026 – Last date for Policy Submission
  • 8 Feb 2026 – Online Policy Presentation

Registration Fees:

  • Individual Participant: ₹177 (₹150 + 18% GST)
  • Team of Two: ₹354 (₹300 + 18% GST)

Awards:

  • 1st Prize: ₹8,000 + Certificate of Merit
  • 2nd Prize: ₹6,000 + Certificate of Merit
  • 3rd Prize: ₹4,000 + Certificate of Merit
  • 4th & 5th Prize: ₹1,000 + Certificate of Merit
  • Certificates of Merit for Top 10 participants
  • Certificate of Participation for all participants

Rules & Guidelines (Highlights):

  • Open to UG, PG students & research scholars from any discipline.
  • Teams of up to two members; cross‑institutional teams allowed.
  • Submissions must propose legislative/regulatory interventions (laws, rules, enforcement frameworks).
  • Format: Times New Roman, size 12 (text), size 10 (footnotes), Bluebook 20th citation.
  • Submissions must be anonymised (team code only).
  • Structure (indicative): Background → Gap Analysis → Objectives → Framework → Enforcement → Roadmap → Impact → Conclusion.
  • Originality required: plagiarism >15% penalised; cross‑plagiarism disqualified.
  • AI‑generated drafts discouraged; predominantly AI‑written entries may be disqualified.
  • Evaluation based on clarity, feasibility, originality, stakeholder sensitivity, and legal reasoning.
  • Shortlisted teams present online (10 min + 5 min Q&A).
