ABOUT THE PROJECT: “The Relevance of the Bhagavad Gita in the Indian Legal System”

The Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, in collaboration with Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation, has launched a research project on the relevance of the Bhagavad Gita in the Indian legal system. It explores Gita’s teachings on dharma, nyaya, karma, and ethics as guiding principles for law and justice. A dedicated research hub with a podcast studio has been set up, engaging 20 students across law programmes. The initiative includes expert sessions, seminars, and conferences, culminating in a comprehensive research publication. It aims to integrate Indian philosophical wisdom into legal education and jurisprudence.

Call for Papers:

The Organizing Committee cordially invites original research papers and articles from Scholars, Academicians, Practitioners, Students and Experts for Presentation at the Conference.

THEMES & SUB-THEMES:

Theme 1: The Bhagavad Gita and the Constitution of India

  • Dharma and the Preamble – Justice, Equality, and Liberty.
  • The Bhagavad Gita’s Influence on Indian Constituent Assembly Debates.
  • The Bhagavad Gita and the Rule of Law in Constitutional Governance.
  • Equality versus Equity: A Dharmic Vision in Constitutional Provisions.

  • Duty, Rights, and Power: Dharma-based Perspectives.
  • Detachment (Nishkama Karma) and Impartiality in Governance.
  • Code of Conduct: A Principled Approach.
  • Svadharama and Decision-making as an Adjudicator.

Theme 3: The Bhagavad Gita and Indian Criminal Law

  • Purpose underlying Criminal Law.
  • Causes and Contributing Factors of Mens Rea (Kaam, Krodh, Moh, and Lobh).
  • Procedural Safeguards in Criminal Law (Witness and Victim Protection, Fair and Speedy Trial).
  • Sentencing Policy through the lens of the Bhagavad Gita.

Theme 4. The Bhagavad Gita at the Intersection of the Normative Framework of International Law

  • Universal Brotherhood and Global Governance (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam).
  • Just War and Humanitarian Principles.
  • Collective Obligations for Lokasaṅgraha.
  • Soft Power and Diplomacy: India’s Role as a Global Mediator.

Theme 5. The Bhagavad Gita and Environmental Law: Dharma, Sustainability, and Legal Framework.

  • Ecological Dharma and Constitutional Environmentalism.
  • Svadharma and Intergenerational Environmental Justice.
  • Circular Waste Management and the Bhagavad Gita’s Cycle of Renewal.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethical Environmentalism.
  • Principles of Environmental Law and Tortious Liability: Insights from the Bhagavad Gita.

Theme 6. The Bhagavad Gita and Alternative Dispute Resolution: Dharma, Dialogue and Due Process

  • Addressing Docket Explosion through Traditional Litigation and Modern ADR.
  • Mediation and Access to Justice.
  • Grassroots Justice: Community-Based Mediation

NOTE: Any paper aligning with the sub-themes or objectives of the conference, may also be considered for presentation.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • The paper should be based on original research work that has not been published yet.
  • A maximum of two authors is allowed per paper.
  • If any LL.B./ LL.M. student desires to participate and present a paper, such participant must mandatorily participate along with his/her teacher/research scholar of the institution as an author/co-author.
  • The author must submit an abstract of 350 words with five keywords.
  • The abstract should clearly outline the title, research problem, methodology, and key arguments/conclusions.
  • After the shortlisting of the abstract, the author must submit a full paper of 6000-8000 words.
  • The participant shall submit the abstract in the given google link mentioned below:

  • After acceptance of the abstract and payment of registration fees, the participants will receive a separate Google link for submission of a full working paper.
  • The details provided during the registration process will be used for all purposes including issuing of Certificates. No request for change will be entertained later.
  • The submissions should be in Times New Roman Font size 12, Line spacing 1.5, and Bluebook 21st edition or ILI mode of citation style only.
  • The cover page of the abstract and manuscript should include the name of the author/co-author, affiliating institution, and contact details.
  • The selected paper shall be peer-reviewed and evaluated based on the originality.
  • Payment details will be communicated in due course to the participants after the abstracts have been shortlisted by the review committee.
  • The cover letter shall contain the name of author(s), affiliation(s), themes, contact detail(s), email address and DECLARATION OF ORIGINALITY OF THE PAPER.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Academicians, Legal Practitioners, Researchers, Students pursuing LL.M. and LL.B. and Experts interested in the theme of the conference.
(Note: LL.B. / LL.M. students are required to mandatorily submit their Research Papers with Research Scholars or Faculty members.)

*Awards will be presented to 3 BEST PAPERS!
*Participants (attendees who are not presenting papers) are required to pay the applicable fee as mentioned above.

Travel Allowances & Accommodation:

No TA/DA will be provided to participants. They are advised to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation. However, upon prior request a limited number of accommodations may be facilitated. The expense for such accommodation shall be borne by the participant making such request.
