Introduction:

The Department of Revenue, Government of India, has issued revised guidelines for its Internship Programme (modifying the earlier guidelines dated 01.09.2009). The programme is designed to engage young scholars from reputed academic institutions in the preparatory work associated with the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The initiative aims to foster interaction between departmental officers and students, enabling critical analysis of GST’s jurisprudential, socioeconomic, and statistical implications. Interns will gain exposure to the process of developing one of India’s most significant tax reforms.

Objectives:

  • To provide interns with hands‑on experience in tax reform processes.
  • To enable the Department to benefit from fresh academic perspectives.
  • To familiarize interns with the functioning of the State Taxes Division and national‑level policy development.

Eligibility:

Candidates eligible to apply include:

  • Graduates with first‑class degrees or those pursuing post‑graduation/research in Economics, Finance, or Management at national schools of economics, central universities, or recognized institutions.
  • Students pursuing 5‑year integrated law courses at National Law Schools (Bangalore, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Kolkata).
  • Students enrolled in undergraduate/graduate courses at IITs.
  • Students who have cleared PE II stage of the CA course.
  • Candidates with a high second‑class postgraduate degree in relevant fields may also apply.

Duration & Remuneration:

  • Internship duration: Maximum 6 months, at different points during the year.
  • Remuneration: ₹5,000 per month per intern, payable at the end of the internship.

Nature of Work:

  • Interns will be attached to the Deputy Secretary/Director in the State Taxes Division.
  • Responsibilities include research, analysis, and preparation of reports/papers on GST.
  • Interns must present a report/paper at the end of their internship.
  • A certificate of completion will be issued upon successful submission.

Application Process:

Interested candidates must:

  1. Submit applications in the prescribed proforma.
  2. Attach their CV along with the application.
  3. Send applications by email to arvindkumar@nic.in at least 15 days before the intended start date.

Applications will be scrutinized by a Selection Committee, and offers will be extended to selected candidates subject to slot availability and approval of the Competent Authority.

  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Selection is subject to merit and availability of slots.
  • The programme offers valuable exposure to national‑level tax reform processes.
