About the Opportunity:
The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) offers a limited number of internships each year to students and recent graduates in law, international relations, public relations, political science, library science, and translation.
Interns work under the supervision of Registry officials and gain hands-on exposure to the Tribunal’s functioning. The three-month programme provides a unique opportunity to:
- Understand the Tribunal’s role in international law.
- Contribute to research and Registry work.
- Engage with issues in the law of the sea, public international law, and international institutions.
Who Can Apply:
Applicants should:
- Have completed at least three years of university studies.
- Be enrolled in a degree-granting or postgraduate course at the time of application, or be a recent graduate.
- Normally not be more than 32 years of age.
- Have a good command of English and/or French.
- Demonstrate interest in international law, especially the law of the sea, international affairs, or international institutions.
Note: Indian students and aspirants are eligible to apply.
Internship Duration:
- Period: October to December 2026
- Length: 3 months
Application Deadlines:
- October–December 2026 Internship: Apply by 31 March 2026
- Other periods:
- January–March → Apply by 30 June (previous year)
- April–June → Apply by 30 September (previous year)
- July–September → Apply by 31 December (previous year)
Key Tasks:
Interns will:
- Conduct legal research and prepare notes for Registry officials.
- Undertake independent research on a chosen topic, present findings in writing, and deliver an oral presentation.
- Prepare weekly press reviews on developments in the law of the sea.
- Participate in the daily routine of Registry departments and interact with Tribunal members.

Important Details:
- Cost: No remuneration. Travel, accommodation, and living expenses are borne by interns or sponsoring institutions.
- Funding: Limited financial assistance available through the Trust Fund for the Law of the Sea.
- Visa: Interns must arrange visas for Germany. Assistance may be provided by the internship coordinator.
- Travel & Accommodation: Interns arrange their own travel and stay in Hamburg. Guidance on temporary accommodation is available.
- Medical Insurance: Proof of adequate health/accident insurance and a medical certificate are mandatory.
- Confidentiality: Interns must maintain confidentiality of unpublished information.
- Certificate: Issued upon completion, detailing tasks and performance evaluation.
