About the Centre:
The Centre for Legal History of India (CLHI) in the Department European and Comparative Legal History at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt/Main is dedicated to advancing research and academic collaboration in the field of Indian legal history. Its primary objective is to strengthen and professionalize the discipline by providing training, mentorship, and resources to doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, equipping them to produce high-quality scholarship.
Scholarships Opportunity for PhD:
The Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory offers two funding lines for PhD students, designed to support different stages of doctoral research in law, legal history, and legal theory.
1. Orientation Scholarship (2–6 months):
- For graduates with excellent results in law or humanities, starting a PhD in legal history/legal theory.
- Opportunity to spend 2–6 months at the Institute, refine your project, and engage with an international research community.
- Project must align with one of the Institute’s Research Fields (Departments: Legal Theory, Historical Regimes of Normativity, European & Comparative Legal History, or MPI Research Groups).
- Application Procedure:
- Your application (in English) for an Orientation Scholarship needs to contain the following documents:
- Research proposal (up to 10,000 characters), which shows how the project matches at least one of the Institute’s main Research Fields.
- CV
- The name and address (postal and email) of scholar whom the Institute can contact should a letter of reference be considered necessary.
- Scan of the completed and signed form ‘Additional Application Details’.
2. Dialogue Scholarship (1–3 months):
- For PhD candidates nearing completion who wish to discuss findings and finalize research questions.
- Requires prior contact with an Institute researcher who agrees to act as mentor.
- Duration: 1–3 months.
- Application Procedure:
- Your application (in English) for a Dialogue Scholarship needs to contain the following documents:
- Research proposal (up to 10,000 characters), which shows how the project matches at least one of the Institute’s main Research Fields
- CV
- A favourable evaluation of the project by one of the MPI for Legal History and Legal Theory’s researchers
- Scan of the completed and signed form ‘Additional Application Details’
PhD Funding (3 years):
PhD students pursuing their doctoral project at the Institute may be awarded a funding contract (usually 3 years). Details and open positions are available by accessing the link given below.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
- Please submit your application at least six months before your preferred period of stay.
- The scholarships usually have a duration of either 3 or 6 months.
- Once the scholarship has been granted, changes of the date of the beginning will not be accepted.
- Scholarship holders will receive a monthly stipend of either €1,650 (doctoral students) or €2,700 (post-doctoral researchers).
- Additional income (for example from existing employment relationships) has to be set off against the amount awarded and will thus be taken into account when determining the exact amount of the stipend.
