Faculty Development Programme | Dharma to Data | Xavier Law School | St. Xavier’s University Kolkata | Virtual Mode | Jan 12th- 19th 2026

Event Details:

  • Dharma to Data: Integrating Indian Knowledge Systems and AI‑Driven Innovation in Modern Legal Pedagogy and Practice
  • Organized by Xavier Law School, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata
  • January 12–19, 2026 | Virtual Mode

About the Programme:

The Faculty Development Programme (FDP) is a transformative initiative designed to bridge the gap between India’s rich jurisprudential traditions and the fast‑evolving landscape of AI‑driven legal practice. Titled “Dharma to Data”, this seven‑day intensive programme brings together academicians, legal professionals, and research scholars to explore how classical Indian legal philosophy can complement modern technological innovation in law teaching and practice.

Purpose behind Organizing FDP:

  • India’s legal system is at a critical juncture, transitioning from colonial‑era codes to modernized frameworks.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and digital forensics are reshaping legal practice with tools like predictive case analytics, automated research, and contract review.
  • Despite this, Western‑centric pedagogy dominates law schools, while India’s jurisprudential heritage—rooted in Dharma, Rajadharma, Nyaya, and Yukti—remains underutilized.
  • This FDP emphasizes that Indian traditions and emerging technologies are complementary, not contradictory. Dharma provides the ethical anchor, while AI expands justice delivery capacity.

Objectives:

  • Deepen faculty understanding of Dharma as a jurisprudential framework.
  • Equip educators with evidence‑based, student‑centered pedagogical methods.
  • Build competence in AI and emerging legal technologies.
  • Integrate contemporary legal challenges into curriculum design.
  • Support actionable plans for sustainable innovation in legal education.

Themes:

  1. Dharma as Foundational Jurisprudence
    • Exploring dharmic principles in constitutional law, criminal justice, and human rights.
    • Analyzing classical texts (Manusmriti, Arthashastra, Dharmasutras) alongside Supreme Court jurisprudence.
  2. Pedagogical Transformation
    • Shifting from doctrinal teaching to active, student‑centered learning.
    • Case‑based and problem‑based approaches for critical thinking.
  3. Technology, AI, and Legal Practice
    • Applications of AI in legal research, judicial analytics, cybercrime investigation, and data privacy.
    • Addressing ethical challenges and algorithmic bias.
  4. Contemporary Legal Challenges and Innovation
