Conference Overview:

Recent developments in Asia demonstrate that securitisation is no longer confined to highly visible conflicts such as Russia–Ukraine or Israel–Hamas. Interstate armed confrontations have occurred in Asia, including the India–Pakistan conflict and the Thailand–Cambodia border clashes. Meanwhile, military exercises by the United States and its allies in the Asia–Pacific region have intensified, and China continues military operations around Taiwan. These dynamics have heightened security concerns among States in the region.

This conference invites papers that explore how security concerns influence the development, interpretation, and application of international law in Asia, or how international law constrains governmental authorities from enacting securitisation measures. Securitisation now permeates virtually all branches of international law, including jus ad bellum, jus in bello, jus post bellum, the law of the sea, space law, human rights law, environmental law, and economic law. The rise of “economic security” as a policy priority has reshaped legal discourse in trade, investment, and technology governance, while environmental obligations are increasingly framed through security concerns.

   – Militarisation of outer space in Asia

   – Cybersecurity frameworks shaped by security imperatives
7. Theoretical, Historical, Sociological, and Critical Approaches
   – Critical security theories on Asian legal orders
   – Historical trajectories of security framing
   – Media and public perception of security threats

Language:

The conference will be bilingual, accepting papers in both English and Japanese. Abstracts may be submitted in either language. Concurrent sessions will be organised separately by language.

Application Procedure:

Submit the following in a single file to CfPAsianSIL@gmail.com by February 28, 2026:

1. Paper title
2. Abstract (≤500 words in English or ≤1,000 letters in Japanese)
3. Name
4. Affiliation and position
5. Short biography (≤200 words in English or ≤400 letters in Japanese)
6. Up to three relevant academic works
7. Contact details (email, phone, address)

Screening:

The Research and Planning Committee will review proposals and notify applicants by March 31, 2026.

Conference Papers:

Final papers (1,000–5,000 words in English or 2,000–10,000 letters in Japanese) must be submitted by June 15, 2026. Papers will be shared electronically with participants in advance.

Fees:

• Members: Exempt from participation fee
• Non-members: 10,000 yen (≈60 USD, includes lunch and dinner reception) or annual membership (3,000 yen)
• Travel and accommodation expenses are self-funded.

Lunch and Dinner Reception:

• Lunch meeting: 1,500 yen (mandatory for presenters)
• Dinner reception: ≈5,000 yen (strongly recommended for networking)
• Costs included in non-member participation fee.

Presentation Time:

Each presentation must be completed within 15 minutes.
