Call for Papers: 4th NLUO-CLS Essay Writing Competition

The Constitutional Law Society (CLS) of National Law University Odisha (NLUO), Cuttack announces the 4th NLUO-CLS Essay Writing Competition, inviting law students across India to engage in critical constitutional debates and contribute to contemporary scholarship.

Established under Act 4 of 2008, NLUO is committed to advancing legal education, research, and professional skills in advocacy, judicial services, and dispute resolution. The Constitutional Law Society fosters informed deliberation in constitutional law and allied subjects, encouraging students to explore doctrinal and policy-oriented issues.

Event Details

  • Mode: Online
  • Eligibility:
    • Students pursuing 3-year/5-year LLB
    • Students pursuing 1-year/2-year LLM
    • Students enrolled in any other UG/PG law degree from a recognized university

Themes

Participants may choose from the following broad themes (indicative, not mandatory):

I. The Proportionality Test: Rights, Restriction, and Dissent in Constitutional India

Indicative topics include:

  • Bail thresholds under UAPA
  • Hate speech regulation vs. free expression
  • Electoral roll revisions and disenfranchisement
  • Morality and decency restrictions on speech
  • Right to protest and constitutional morality

II. Borrowed Constitutions: Transplant, Translation, and Transformation in Comparative Constitutionalism

Indicative topics include:

  • Judicial borrowing and foreign precedents
  • Federalism models across jurisdictions
  • Comparative amendment procedures
  • U.S. First Amendment jurisprudence in India
  • Directive Principles: indigenous innovation or transplant

Submission Guidelines

  • Format: .doc/.docx (Word 2007+)
  • Word limit: 1500–2500 words (excluding abstract)
  • Abstract: 50–100 words
  • Citations: Hyperlink preferred; endnotes allowed if hyperlinks unavailable
  • Formatting: Times New Roman, size 12, line spacing 1.5, justified text
  • Deadline: 18th September 2026
  • Originality: Plagiarism-free; AI usage strictly prohibited

Evaluation Process

  • Double-blind peer review in two stages:
    • Technical Review: Plagiarism, AI usage, grammar, language
    • Content Review: Novelty, relevance, contemporariness
  • Criteria: Grammar, logical coherence, research depth, contemporary relevance, contribution to literature

Registration

  • Deadline: 28th August 2026
  • Fee (non-refundable):
    • NLUO Students: ₹250 (single), ₹400 (co-authorship)
    • Non-NLUO Students: ₹300 (single), ₹500 (co-authorship)
  • Payment via ICICI Eazypay portal (Institution Name: National Law University)
  • Upload payment receipt in registration form

Prizes

  • Winner: ₹7,500 + Publication in CLS Blog + Certificate
  • Runner-up: ₹5,000 + Publication in CLS Blog + Certificate
  • Second Runner-up: ₹2,500 + Publication in CLS Blog + Certificate
  • All Participants: Certificate of Participation
