Introduction:
The Law Commission of India, constituted by the Government of India under the Ministry of Law and Justice, has announced its remodeled Voluntary Internship Scheme, effective July 1, 2025. This initiative is designed to provide law students and scholars with hands‑on exposure to the Commission’s research‑oriented work in law reform, policy development, and modernization of the legal system.
Objective:
The scheme aims to engage undergraduate and postgraduate law students in meaningful legal research, drafting, and policy analysis. Interns will gain practical experience by contributing to projects that shape Indian legal discourse.
Eligibility:
- Students who have completed at least 2 years of a 5‑year law degree course or 1 year of a 3‑year law degree course at a recognized institution are eligible.
- Each candidate may apply only once per financial year.
Duration:
- Standard internship period: 4 weeks.
- Extension possible up to 8 weeks, subject to recommendation and approval.
Application Process:
- Applications must be submitted online at lci-dla@nic.in, at least two months before the intended start date.
- Required documents:
- Updated CV.
- Institutional ID card.
- Signed and stamped recommendation letter from a professor/dean.
- Latest marksheet.
- Selection will be made by a screening committee based on academic performance, statement of purpose, and slot availability.
- Maximum slots: 12 interns at a time (subject to Chairperson’s discretion).
Place of Work:
- Interns will ordinarily work at the Law Commission’s Office, Lok Nayak Bhavan, Khan Market, New Delhi.
- Hybrid/remote options may be considered depending on circumstances.
Nature of Work:
Interns may be assigned tasks such as:
- Legal research on legislation, judicial decisions, and Commission reports.
- Drafting research papers, consultation reports, and working documents.
- Compiling case laws, statutes, and comparative legal materials.
- Assisting in seminars, discussions, and ongoing studies.
- Submitting a short research paper or digital presentation at the end of internship.
Attendance & Conduct:
- Minimum 75% attendance required for certification.
- Interns must maintain strict confidentiality and professional decorum.
- Any misconduct or breach of confidentiality will result in termination.
Logistics:
- This is an unpaid internship. Interns must bear their own travel and accommodation expenses.
- Access to the Commission’s library, legal databases, and workspace will be provided.
Certification:
- A certificate will be issued upon successful completion, subject to evaluation of the intern’s research output.
Key Notes:
- The Chairperson has discretion to relax conditions for deserving candidates.
- The scheme may be reviewed and updated periodically.
