Founded in 2002 with the support of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Centre for Studies in Banking and Finance (CSBF) serves as a hub for academic and professional engagement in the financial sector. Through research, events, and collaborative initiatives, the Centre aims to strengthen intellectual capacity in areas such as financial markets, corporate finance, and regulatory frameworks.

About the Competition:

The Fifth NLUJ‑CSBF Essay Writing Competition 2026 invites law students to contribute original essays on pressing issues in financial regulation and misconduct. The competition provides a platform for participants to critically analyze contemporary challenges in digital lending and propose innovative regulatory responses.

Theme & Suggested Sub‑Topics:

Main Theme: Financial Market Misconduct in the Era of Digital Lending: Detection Challenges and Regulatory Responses

Suggested sub‑topics include:

  • RegTech and SupTech: Technology as a tool for detecting misconduct in digital lending.
  • Enforcement challenges against illegal digital lending apps: A cross‑border legal perspective.
  • Dark patterns and deceptive design in FinTech interfaces: Emerging concerns in market misconduct.
  • The rise of unregulated lending apps (ULAs): Expanding the regulatory perimeter.

Eligibility:

  • Open to all students pursuing undergraduate (3‑year or 5‑year law courses) or postgraduate law degrees.
  • Institutions must be recognized by the Bar Council of India.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Essays must not exceed 3500 words (exclusive of footnotes).
  • The first page should contain the title and a 200‑word abstract.
  • The second page should include a table of contents, followed by the main body.
  • Submissions must remain anonymous; disclosure of author details within the manuscript will lead to disqualification.
  • Only original, unpublished work is accepted.
  • Plagiarism above 10% will result in rejection.
  • Use of Artificial Intelligence tools is permitted up to 20%; exceeding this limit will lead to disqualification.
  • Co‑authorship is allowed for up to two authors.
  • By submitting, authors transfer copyright to the organizers.

Prizes & Recognition:

  • First Prize: ₹30,000 + Certificate of Merit
  • Second Prize: ₹25,000 + Certificate of Merit
  • Third Prize: ₹15,000 + Certificate of Merit
  • Special Mention Certificates for the 4th and 5th best entries.
  • Winning essay considered for publication in Scholasticus, the Centre’s journal.
  • Selected entries may also be published on the CSBF Blog.
