Introduction:

The Indo‑Swiss Joint Research Programme (ISJRP) was initiated under the 2003 Agreement between the Swiss Federal Council and the Government of India to strengthen bilateral cooperation in science, technology, and social sciences.

For 2026, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) invite proposals for Joint Research Projects (JRPs). These projects aim to foster cutting‑edge, collaborative research between Switzerland and India, with a strong emphasis on reciprocity, parity, and innovation.


Scope of Research:

Proposals must fall within one of the following four thematic areas in social sciences:

  • Digital Governance, AI Ethics & Social Impact of AI
  • Inequality, Justice & Inclusion
  • Mobility & Social Integration
  • Economic Transformation

Projects outside these areas will not be considered.


Key Dates:

  • Closing Date: 8 April 2026 (17:00 CEST)
  • Project Duration: 3 years (36 months, starting earliest 1 January 2027)
  • Funding Limit: Maximum of 10 projects will be supported

Funding Details:

  • Swiss side (SNSF): Up to CHF 300,000 per project (3 years)
  • Indian side (ICSSR): Up to INR 25 lakh per project (3 years)

Eligible costs include personnel (PhD/postdocs), consumables, minor equipment, mobility, conferences, and networking. Reciprocal visits between Switzerland and India are encouraged.


Eligibility:

  • Each proposal must have one applicant in Switzerland and one in India.
  • Swiss applicants: Must meet SNSF funding regulations.
  • Indian applicants: Must hold a PhD/equivalent, be employed in a recognised academic/research institution, and have sufficient publications.

Submission Process:

  • Proposals must be submitted via the SNSF Portal (English only).
  • Indian applicants must also send:
    • A soft copy (PDF) by email to adinchargeics@gmail.com
    • One hard copy by Speed Post to ICSSR, New Delhi, within 7 working days of the SNSF deadline.

Incomplete or late submissions will be disqualified.


Evaluation:

  • Joint peer review by SNSF & ICSSR with international experts.
  • Criteria include:
    • Scientific relevance & originality
    • Suitability of methods & feasibility
    • Applicants’ track record
    • Collaborative value of Indo‑Swiss partnership

Only the 10 highest‑ranked proposals will be funded.
