United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme 2026:

Overview:

The International Law Fellowship Programme (ILFP) is organized by the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs under the UN Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law. It offers high-quality training by leading scholars and practitioners, fostering deeper knowledge of international law and the legal work of the United Nations.

  • Venue: Peace Palace, The Hague, Netherlands
  • Dates: 29 June – 31 July 2026
  • Language: English (fluency required)
  • Capacity: 20 participants from developing countries and emerging economies
  • Deadline: 30 March 2026

Objectives:

  • Provide advanced training on core areas of international law.
  • Enable participants to exchange experiences and ideas in interactive sessions.
  • Strengthen global cooperation and understanding of contemporary legal issues.
  • Support government officials and teachers of international law from developing regions.

Course Content:

Participants will attend lectures and seminars organized by the UN Codification Division and the Public International Law Session at The Hague Academy of International Law. Topics may include:

  • Treaty Law
  • International Responsibility
  • International Peace & Security
  • Peaceful Settlement of Disputes
  • Diplomatic & Consular Law
  • International Human Rights Law
  • International Humanitarian Law
  • International Criminal Law
  • International Environmental Law
  • Law of the Sea
  • International Trade & Investment Law

Format & Certification:

  • Interactive lectures, seminars, and discussions.
  • Comprehensive training materials provided.
  • Certificates awarded upon completion.

Eligibility & Selection:

  • Applicants must have professional experience in international law.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory (proof required if not native/academic language).
  • Selection considers geographical representation, gender balance, and priority for candidates from Member States without prior fellowship recipients.
  • Applications from qualified female candidates are strongly encouraged.

Financial Arrangements:

  • Fellowship participants receive financial support covering travel, accommodation, medical insurance, and living expenses.
  • Self-funded positions are also available (participants bear all costs).

Application Process:

  1. Part I: Complete the online form at [Microsoft Forms link provided in application instructions].
  2. Part II: Fill out the Word application form, including:
    • Personal history, education, employment record, publications.
    • Statement of relevance of international law to current duties.
    • Plan for applying knowledge gained.
    • Signed Letter of Transmission by a senior official of nominating institution.
    • Signed Recommendation by supervisor/institution.
    • Proof of English proficiency (if applicable).
  3. Submit the scanned signed application (PDF/JPG) via email to ilfp@un.org.
  4. File naming format: [Last Name], [First Name] – ILFP 2026 (e.g., Doe, John – ILFP 2026.pdf).

Important: Applications received after 30th March 2026 will not be considered. The UN does not charge any fees at any stage of the process.
