About the Event:

The Centre for Human Rights (CHR) at the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi, invites submissions for the National Essay Writing Competition 2025.

This initiative seeks to encourage rigorous analysis, original perspectives, and research-driven insight into the evolving challenges of human rights in India. The competition theme is:
“Human Rights: Law, Policy and Practice in a Changing India.”

Themes (Choose One):

  • Algorithmic Justice – Equality, due process, and discrimination in algorithmic decision-making (welfare, credit scoring, policing).
  • Data as Dignity – Privacy as an autonomous human right amidst mass data collection.
  • Climate Migrants & Constitutional Protections – Legal issues of climate-induced displacement and State obligations under Article 21.
  • Gender, Technology & Safety – Legal responses to deepfakes, doxxing, online harassment, revenge porn, and related harms.
  • Environmental Rights of Indigenous Peoples – Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in development contexts.

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate law students enrolled in any Indian university/college.
  • Maximum of two authors per submission.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Word limit: 1500–2000 words (excluding footnotes, index, bibliography).
  • Submit two versions: Word (.docx) and PDF.
  • Formatting:
    • Font: Times New Roman
    • Size: Body – 12 Footnotes – 10
    • Line spacing: Body – 1.5 Footnotes – 1.0
    • Margins: Standard
  • Citation: Bluebook 21st Edition (footnotes only)
  • Plagiarism limit: ≤ 10% (UGC guidelines).
  • AI tools for drafting, editing, or generating content are strictly prohibited.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Originality of thought and analytical depth
  • Quality and accuracy of legal research (cases, statutes, reports, international instruments)
  • Structure, coherence, and strength of argumentation
  • Relevance to contemporary human rights discourse
  • Language, presentation, and citation accuracy

Important Dates:

  • Registration Deadline: 15 December 2025
  • Submission Deadline: 25 December 2025

Prizes:

  • 1st Prize: ₹5,000
  • 2nd Prize: ₹3,000
  • 3rd Prize: ₹2,000
