Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai, through its Law, Humanities, and Social Sciences (LHSS) Collective, announces the Legislative Review Competition 2026. This initiative builds upon LHSS’s vision of fostering interdisciplinary dialogue at the intersection of law, humanities, and social sciences.

About the LHSS Collective:

The LHSS Collective evolved from the LHSS Blog, launched in January 2022, to address the lack of platforms in the Global South dedicated to studying law in relation to social sciences. Over time, it expanded into a vibrant collective producing editorials, podcasts, literature roundups, and collaborations with sister organizations.

About MNLU Mumbai:

Established under the Maharashtra National Law University Act, 2014, MNLU Mumbai is a premier institution imparting advanced legal education and promoting society-oriented research. Under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Dilip Ukey, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, the University emphasizes advocacy, law reforms, and social transformation.

About the Competition:

The Legislative Review Competition invites participants to critically analyze legislations enacted between 2024–2026 in the Global South. Reviews must explore:

• The legislation’s intent, enforcement, and socio-political impact.
• Its effect on marginalized communities, including workers, farmers, minorities, and gender-diverse groups.
• Reform-oriented recommendations, drawing from Law Commission Reports, policy alternatives, or amendments.

This competition promotes rigorous legal research and encourages participants to interrogate dominant narratives, foreground Global South perspectives, and propose democratic accountability in lawmaking.

Concept Note:

Law has historically functioned as both a promise and a weapon—proclaiming rights while entrenching hierarchies. In the postcolonial Global South, legislations on immigration, land acquisition, labour, public health, and digital governance continue to shape democratic life. Vulnerable groups—informal workers, smallholder farmers, indigenous communities, minorities, and stateless persons—remain disproportionately affected. Emerging technologies further embed historical biases, making reform-oriented scholarship essential.

Format & Registration:

• Submission Structure:
  • 150–200 word summary of chosen legislation.
  • Sectional or thematic analysis.
  • Reform recommendations.
• Registration Fee:
  • Single Author – INR 350
  • Co-author (two persons) – INR 700

• Registration Opens: 15 June 2026
• Last Date for Registration: 20 July 2026
• Submission Deadline: 26 July 2026
• Results Declaration: 10 August 2026

Submission Guidelines:

• Word Limit: 1500–2500 words.
• Format: MS Word (.doc/.docx).
• Original, unpublished work only.
• Co-authorship allowed (max. 2 authors).
• Plagiarism tolerance: 10%. AI-generated content strictly prohibited.
• Anonymous submissions via Google Form (post-registration).

Prizes:

• Best Legislative Review – INR 3,000
• Runner-Up – INR 2,000
• Top 3 submissions considered for publication in LHSS Journal | Vol 1, Issue 2 (subject to editorial discretion).
