Policy and Advocacy Internship – Climate and Security Risk (UNDP):
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is inviting applications for the position of Policy and Advocacy Intern – Climate and Security Risk. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge work at the intersection of climate change, peacebuilding, and security.
Background:
Climate change is a multidimensional challenge that not only impacts the environment but also development and security. While it does not directly cause violent conflict, it multiplies risks by:
- Overburdening state capacity
- Increasing vulnerabilities of communities
- Exacerbating socio-economic and political fragilities
UNDP’s Climate Security Offer focuses on:
- Climate-proofing prevention and peacebuilding
- Ensuring peace-positive mitigation and adaptation
- Delivering integrated approaches to climate action and sustaining peace
- Strengthening regional and cross-border capacities to address climate-related security risks
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Team Leader – Climate Security Risk, the intern will assist in:
- Policy and advocacy work (drafting, formatting, proofing communications)
- Collecting and analyzing data from projects and programmes
- Preparing compendiums of good practices in climate, peace, and security
- Supporting data visualization and preparing infographics/factsheets
- Drafting social media posts and promotional content
- Providing administrative and substantive support for meetings/events
- Conducting research and preparing background documents
Requirements:
- Experience in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, climate change, or related areas
- Strong understanding of international development, resilience, and security issues
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Ability to work independently under pressure and meet deadlines
- Strong interpersonal skills and teamwork orientation
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Microsoft Power BI) is a plus
Education:
Applicants must:
- Be enrolled in a graduate programme, or
- Be in the final year of a bachelor’s degree, or
- Have graduated within the last year (internship must start within one year of graduation).
Language Requirements:
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
- Knowledge of another UN language is an asset
Internship Details:
- Location: New York, United States (Remote/Office-based)
- Duration: 3 months
- Schedule: Full-time
