NITI Aayog Internship Scheme: Academic Overview

Introduction

The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) has instituted a structured Internship Scheme designed to provide students and research scholars with meaningful exposure to the processes of governance and policy formulation. This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical policy engagement, thereby cultivating informed perspectives among the younger generation.

Objectives

The scheme is intended to:

  • Facilitate short-term association of students with NITI Aayog’s divisions and units.
  • Enable interns to contribute to empirical research, policy papers, and analytical reports.
  • Provide participants with insights into developmental policy issues and institutional functioning.

Eligibility Criteria

The scheme prescribes rigorous academic thresholds to ensure quality participation:

  • Undergraduate students must have completed or appeared in their second-year examinations and secured a minimum of 85% marks at the Class XII level.
  • Graduate and postgraduate students must have completed or appeared in their first-year examinations with at least 70% marks at the undergraduate level.
  • Recent graduates are eligible within six months of result declaration, subject to the same academic requirements.

Duration

Internships may extend from a minimum of six weeks to a maximum of six months. Completion of the minimum tenure is mandatory for issuance of the internship certificate.

Application Process

Applications are invited online only, through the official NITI Aayog portal. The window for submission remains open from the 1st to the 10th of every month. Applicants must indicate their preferred area of interest, which may include domains such as law, economics, governance, health, infrastructure, and agriculture. Each candidate may apply only once in a financial year.

Selection and Certification

Heads of divisions may select up to three interns at a time, subject to approval by the Chief Executive Officer in exceptional cases. Selected interns are required to furnish a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their institution. Certification is contingent upon successful completion of the internship and maintenance of at least 75% attendance.

Facilities and Responsibilities

Interns are expected to carry their own laptops. NITI Aayog provides workspace, internet connectivity, and access to relevant resources. At the conclusion of the internship, participants must submit a comprehensive report or paper reflecting their learning and contributions.

Important Note

The Internship Scheme is an unpaid opportunity, yet it offers invaluable academic and professional exposure. It is subject to periodic review and modification by NITI Aayog, with discretionary powers vested in the CEO to relax conditions for deserving candidates.
