Theme: Labour in the Time of Crises: New Frontiers, Old Challenges

Dates: 11–13 March 2027

Organised by: Association of Indian Labour Historians (AILH) & Centre for Labour Studies, NLSIU

About the Conference

The 14th International Conference on Labour History seeks to explore how overlapping crises—technological disruption, climate change, global migration, economic inequality, and legislative restructuring—are reshaping the world of work. The conference will provide a platform for scholars, practitioners, and activists to critically examine continuities and ruptures in labour history, law, and practice.

Conference Themes

Participants are invited to submit papers engaging with the following clusters:

1. Technology, AI, and the Crisis of Agency
   • Algorithmic control, automation, and workplace surveillance
   • Historical antecedents from Taylorism to cybernetic management
   • Worker responses to technological displacement
2. Law, Regulation, and Rights of Labour
   • Evolution of labour laws and segmented informality
   • India’s Labour Codes in comparative perspective
   • Workplace rights in the era of deregulation and technological disruption
3. Migration, Agrarian Urbanism, and Global Shocks
   • Internal and transnational migration flows
   • Climate, pandemic, and war as accelerators of distress migration
   • Migrant agency and solidarities across fractured geographies
4. Care Work, Domestic Labour, and Social Identities
   • Gender, caste, ethnicity, and citizenship in care/domestic work
   • Redefining social reproduction in times of crisis
   • Historical exclusions and contestations of “who counts as a worker”
5. Labour Movements and the Praxis of Resistance
   • Historical repertoires of resistance and new solidarities
   • Legal and extralegal claims-making
   • Connections between scholarship and contemporary struggles for dignity

Panel proposals (3–4 papers) linking multiple themes are also welcome.

Submission Guidelines

• Abstract: 500 words outlining argument, sources/methods, and thematic fit
• Biographical Note: 100 words
• Panel Proposals: Abstracts for all papers + chair/discussant details
• Full Paper: 5,000–6,000 words (due 1 February 2027)
• Format: In‑person conference only
• Funding: Limited domestic support; institutional funding assistance encouraged

• Notification of Acceptance: 20 October 2026
• Full Paper Deadline: 1 February 2027
