Academic Fellow under the Chair on Investment Treaty Arbitration (2026):
National Law University Delhi (NLUD), established by Act No. 1 of 2008, invites applications for one (01) Academic Fellow under the prestigious Chair on Investment Treaty Arbitration, instituted by Justice Indu Malhotra (Former Judge, Supreme Court of India).
About the Chair:
The Chair has been set up to advance research and capacity building in investment treaty arbitration and international commercial arbitration, areas of growing importance in India’s legal and policy landscape. Its objectives include:
- Research on complex issues arising from investment treaty claims and damages.
- Drafting and interpretation of treaties (investment and trade specific).
- Study of dispute resolution modes: state–state, investor–state, joint interpretative statements, and reforms in ISDS.
- Examination of international best practices in treaty law.
- Training in procedural aspects of arbitration across institutions.
- Contribution to policy development, including participation in UNCITRAL Working Groups and collaboration with think tanks.
- Launch and management of a Certificate Course in International Commercial & Investment Treaty Arbitration.
Position Details:
- Title: Academic Fellow
- Chair: Investment Treaty Arbitration
- Number of Positions: 01
- Remuneration: ₹50,000 per month (subject to 10% TDS deduction)
- Tenure: One year (extendable based on performance and funding)
- Location: NLUD Campus, Sector 14, Dwarka, New Delhi
- Working Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, all working days
Eligibility Criteria:
- LL.M. degree from a recognised Indian or foreign university with minimum 55% marks (or equivalent grade).
- Strong academic record.
- Proven proficiency in international commercial arbitration and investment treaty arbitration.
- Prior research experience (field work, data collection) desirable.
- Demonstrable research track record in relevant subjects; interdisciplinary research is an advantage.
Role & Responsibilities:
The Academic Fellow will:
- Undertake research on investment treaty arbitration and related disputes.
- Author scholarly papers, reports, and books.
- Collaborate with universities, academics, and organisations in India and abroad.
- Manage the Certificate Course in International Commercial & Investment Treaty Arbitration.
- Organise events, workshops, lectures, and talks to foster dialogue on access to justice.
- Contribute to policy development and advocacy initiatives.
- Assist in preparing the annual report of the Chair’s activities.
