1st GNLU-LSC National Essay Writing Competition on Legal Aid and Access to Justice, 2026
Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar, established under the GNLU Act, 2003, is India’s largest National Law University in terms of student, faculty, and academic discourse strength. It offers integrated law degrees in five streams, along with LL.M., Ph.D., and diploma programs across diverse legal and interdisciplinary fields. The University is committed to imparting quality legal education contextualized within contemporary policy and practice.
The GNLU Legal Services Committee, set up under Section 4(k) of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, serves as the epicentre of legal aid activities. It promotes law as an instrument of social change through pro-bono clinics, research projects, and initiatives such as the Prison Legal Aid Clinic.
Abhilekh is the newsletter of GNLU LSC, fostering discourse on law, rights, and social justice. The 2025 edition focused on labour rights and social protection, while the 2026 edition emphasizes the constitutional vision of equal access to justice, the role of legal aid institutions, and barriers faced by marginalized communities.
“Legal Aid and Access to Justice” Access to justice is impeded by economic hardship, social exclusion, lack of legal awareness, and institutional barriers. This competition invites critical engagement with these challenges.
Open to all Undergraduate (UG) students across India.
(Participants may choose any relevant topic beyond these indicative themes.)
National Legal Services Day commemorates the enactment of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, reaffirming the constitutional promise of equal access to justice. The competition results will be announced on this day, symbolizing the commitment to strengthening legal aid and justice delivery.
