About Project 39A:

Project 39A at NLUD is one of India’s most distinguished centres working on access to justice, criminal justice reform, legal aid, and empirical legal research. Recognized nationally and internationally, the project is expanding its team to strengthen research-driven policy, training, and institutional reform within the criminal justice system.


Positions Available:

1. Litigation Cum Research Associate (01 Position):

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct legal and empirical research in criminal justice and access to justice.
  • Undertake fieldwork, collate and publish findings.
  • Assist in preparing reports, policy briefs, and academic outputs.
  • Contribute to litigation strategy, legal drafting, and support senior advocates.
  • Engage with courts, institutions, and stakeholders.
  • Develop and expand research projects and databases related to the death penalty.
  • Present Project 39A’s work at forums and undertake administrative tasks.

Eligibility:

  • Graduate with a degree in Law.
  • Strong familiarity with criminal law and the Indian criminal justice system.
  • Proficiency in English and at least one Indian language.

Desirable:

  • Prior experience in litigation, legal research, or policy work.
  • Publications in relevant areas.

2. Academic Fellow (01 Position):

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Manage and coordinate research and policy projects.
  • Support design and implementation of empirical and qualitative research.
  • Coordinate with institutions, researchers, and external stakeholders.
  • Engage with central and state agencies in criminal justice administration.
  • Contribute to publications, reports, and dissemination of findings.
  • Organize events, workshops, and stakeholder engagements.
  • Undertake administrative tasks to further Project 39A’s aims.

Eligibility:

  • LL.M. or relevant Master’s degree with at least 55% marks.
  • Strong academic record.
  • Prior experience in research, project coordination, or policy work.

Desirable:

  • Experience in fieldwork, data collection, and managing research projects.
  • Familiarity with criminal justice systems, legal aid, or access to justice issues.

Remuneration & Tenure:

  • Salary: ₹50,000 per month (subject to 10% TDS deduction).
  • Tenure: One year (contractual), extendable based on performance and availability of funds.
