Winter Internship Programme (WIP) 2025 for Law Students by NHRC (Stipend: Rs. 12,000/-). Last Date to Apply: 4th November 2025.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India was established on 12th October 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, later amended in 2019. The Act defines human rights as rights to life, liberty, equality, and dignity guaranteed by the Constitution or international covenants and enforceable by Indian courts. The NHRC functions in line with the Paris Principles of 1991, endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 1993. It reflects India’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights at both national and global levels.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India is mandated to protect and promote Human Rights, generate awareness vide Section 12 (h) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. Accordingly, the Commission has been regularly conducting ‘Winter and Summer Internship Programmes’ since 1998 and 2000 respectively. For the year 2025, a four week ‘Winter Internship Programme (WIP) 2025’ will commence from 15th December, 2025 (Monday) to 9th January, 2026 (Friday). Applications are invited from eligible students across the country.
i.) Students who have completed 1st year and are pursuing 2nd or 3rd year LLB (3 years) courses;
ii.) Students who have completed 3 years OR Semester VI of the 5 year Integrated Course of BA LLB/ BBA LLB etc. and pursuing 4th and 5th years;
iii.) Students pursuing LLM Course;
iv.) Students pursuing PG Diploma in Human Rights, MA in Human Rights, PG students of Political Science, Sociology, Social Work (MSW), Criminology, Public Administration, Rural Development, History, Economics, Commerce, Anthropology, Mass Communication, International Relations and any of the discipline of Social Sciences would be considered with preference to students pursuing their final year;
v.) Only students of regular courses of UGC Recognized Universities will be eligible.
vi.) Students must have attained a minimum of 65% marks in Class XII and all subsequent Semesters in attended/ attending degree programmes.
vii.) The applicant should not be more than 28 years of age as on 01.10.2025.
viii.) Attested photocopies of mark-sheets (by HoD, where the student is presently studying) for each and every year/ semester, are to be submitted for all the succeeding years from Class X onward., failing which the application will be liable to be rejects. All the applications should be accompanied by a Letter of Recommendation (LOR) bearing the name, signature, date & rubber stamp/ seal of the Principal/ HOD/ Dean of the Institute where the applicant is studying as per Annex – I.
ix.) Reservation as per extant Government of India guidelines for SC/ ST/ OBC/ PwD category will be applied. Candidate has to attach self-Attested Caste Certificate/ Disability Certificate (if applicable). In the event of insufficient number of applications in a particular reserved category being received, the Commission would have the discretion of selecting the students from the General category.
x.) Efforts will be made to give representation to all the States/ UTS subject to receipt of adequate numbers of applications from the respective State/ UT and merit.
xi.) A 250 words write-up (in online form) on the topic ‘Reason for joining as Intern in NHRC’ will be required to be submitted by the applicants which would also be considered as a Statement of Purpose (SOP), along with the online application which will also serve as a basis of selection. Students who have research potential in the areas relating to human rights will be preferred (As indicated by them in the write-up).
xii.) The merit will be made on the basis of marks calculated out of a total of 100 marks on account of Class XII @ 30 Marks, Graduation @ 40 Marks and the Marks scored in the Write-up of 250 words @ 30 Marks.
xiii.) Students who have attended the regular one-month winter/ Summer Internship Programmes organized by NHRC earlier will not be eligible to apply.
This year maximum of 80 students will be admitted for Winter Internship Programme 2025. In addition, 20 students from Delhi and NCR region may be kept in the Wait List. In the event that an intern drops out of the internship, those who have been put in the Wait List may be called to join the internship no later than the second day of the Winter Internship Programme 2025.
Brief Course Structure of WIP 2025 would be Approximately 65-75 sessions on various human rights issues are proposed to be covered to sensitize the interns. The WIP 2025 will include following:
i.) Classroom sessions
ii.) Interaction with Hon’ble Chairperson, Hon’ble Members and senior officers of NHRC
iii.) Research Project work on Human Rights issues
iv.) Book Review Activity
v.) Films on Human Rights & Discussion – Child Labour issues, Anti Trafficking, Rights of the Elderly, Health and Education issues etc. and discussions
vi.) Field Visits to Police Stations/ Jail/ NGO’s/ Parliament House/ National Commission for Women/ Minorities/ Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes/ National Green Tribunal/ National Legal Service Authority/ National Commission for Protection of Child Rights/ Supreme Court of India.
