IGNATIUS TRIAL & ADVOCACY COMPETITION 2026 (IGNITAC’26)

ABOUT THE XAVIER SOCIETY OF LAW AND JUSTICE (XSLAJ)

Meaningful legal education begins in the classroom, but it reaches its fullest expression when students are invited to test doctrine against facts, evidence, professional responsibility and the demands of real advocacy. Guided by this belief, the Xavier Society of Law and Justice (XSLAJ), established in 2020 under the aegis of Xavier Law School, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, has consistently worked to create rigorous platforms for legal learning, research, dispute resolution and courtroom practice.

Inspired by the Jesuit ideal of Magis and the University’s commitment to forming socially responsible professionals, XSLAJ has grown into one of the University’s leading student-run academic bodies. Through flagship initiatives such as the Xavier Mediation Competition, Vox Legis Xaveriana and the Ignatius Trial & Advocacy Competition, the Society brings students into sustained engagement with judges, advocates, academics, law firms, chambers and legal organisations.

IGNITAC represents the Society’s conviction that advocacy cannot be mastered through written submissions and legal propositions alone. It must be practised in the presence of witnesses, tested through questions, refined under pressure and anchored in a disciplined understanding of evidence and procedure.

ABOUT THE IGNATIUS TRIAL & ADVOCACY COMPETITION 2026 (IGNITAC’26)

The Xavier Society of Law and Justice (XSLAJ) proudly presents the Third Edition of the Ignatius Trial & Advocacy Competition, to be conducted physically from 4th to 6th November 2026 at St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata. XSLAJ is honoured to welcome Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. as the Title Partner, with S. Jalan & Co., Lexplosion and Srivastava & Co. as Associate Title Partners. The official Internship Partners are Khaitan & Co., Intelia Law Offices, R. L. Dutt & Co., AjaiAnand Law Offices and AlterEgo Law Office. IGNITAC’26 is further strengthened by an extensive network of professional, academic, knowledge, research, media, outreach and institutional partners, whose collective support enhances the competition’s academic standing, professional reach and participant experience.

Designed for law students seeking to move beyond conventional mooting, IGNITAC’26 offers an intensive experience of the structure, strategy and pressure of a criminal trial. Participants must analyse a comprehensive proposition comprising pleadings, witness statements, medical and forensic materials, electronic evidence, seizure records and competing factual narratives. They must then translate their preparation into persuasive opening and closing statements, examination-in-chief, cross-examination and live witness handling before distinguished adjudicatory panels.

At the heart of IGNITAC’26 lies a demanding circumstantial-evidence problem involving allegations of murder, attempted murder, destruction of a dwelling by fire, criminal conspiracy and common intention. The proposition raises complex questions concerning motive, witness identification, a Test Identification Parade, digital communications, forensic recoveries, medical findings and the legal standard governing an unbroken chain of circumstances, requiring participants to think simultaneously as researchers, case strategists and courtroom advocates. The competition will additionally host a diverse range of official Stall Partners, offering food, beverages, fashion, accessories, fragrances, handicrafts and other products throughout the event, thereby creating a vibrant and engaging experience for participants, adjudicators, guests and attendees.
