NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, through The Square Circle Clinic, invites applications for the position of Social Work Fellow (Male) at its Pune office. This fellowship is part of the Fair Trial Programme, aimed at strengthening legal aid and ensuring fair trial rights for undertrial prisoners in Maharashtra.
About The Square Circle Clinic:
The Square Circle Clinic is a criminal justice initiative at NALSAR University of Law with offices in New Delhi, Pune, Nagpur, and Hyderabad. It undertakes:
- Pro bono criminal defense of death row prisoners and undertrials
- Research and public engagement on death penalty, forensics, punishment, torture prevention, legal aid, and mental health in criminal justice
About the Fair Trial Programme:
The programme provides young lawyers and social workers an opportunity to:
- Ensure quality legal representation for undertrial prisoners
- Collaborate with State Legal Services Authorities
- Work towards reducing undertrial prison populations and strengthening the legal aid system in Maharashtra
Responsibilities of the Fellow:
- Prison visits, interaction with undertrial prisoners, and support in legal aid applications
- Identifying cases eligible for bail/early release
- Socio-legal case work and family outreach for gathering documents/evidence
- Coordinating with authorities for age/address/medical proofs
- Addressing special needs (juvenility, disability, illness, mental health, pregnancy)
- Documentation of interventions and case progress
- Organising training workshops and conferences
- Reporting and programme-related documentation
Eligibility Criteria:
- Post-graduate qualification in Social Work / Helping Professions / Social Sciences / Humanities
- Minimum 1 year full-time grassroots intervention experience
- Proficiency in Marathi and English
- Familiarity with MS Office, email, and internet tools
- Prior experience in criminal justice institutions desirable (qualification relaxable in exceptional cases)
Fellowship Details:
- Stipend: ₹50,000/- per month
- Tenure: One year (extendable annually at University’s discretion)
- Location: Pune (with frequent travel as per programme needs)
