Introduction:
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), HRD Division, has announced the National Renewable Energy Internship (NREI) Scheme to provide structured internship opportunities for students and researchers. This initiative aims to nurture future leaders in renewable energy by engaging them in the Ministry’s programmes, policy research, and project development.
Objective:
The scheme is designed to:
- Engage undergraduate, postgraduate, and research scholars from diverse streams including Engineering, Science, Management, Law, and Renewable Energy.
- Provide exposure to the Ministry’s functioning, programmes, and policy issues.
- Enable interns to contribute through analysis, technical reports, project papers, and policy inputs.
Key Features of the Scheme:
- Name of Scheme: National Renewable Energy Internship (NREI) Scheme
- Periodicity: Internships offered twice a year (preferably July and January), based on MNRE requirements.
- Duration: 2 to 6 months (non‑extendable).
- Number of Interns: Maximum of 20 interns per year.
- Placement: Interns will be attached to senior officers in Programme Divisions.
- Stipend: ₹15,000 per month for physical internships; no stipend for virtual internships.
- Eligibility:
- Students pursuing graduate/postgraduate degrees in recognized institutions in India or abroad.
- Personnel engaged in renewable energy projects in national/international institutes or organizations.
Internship Requirements:
- Declaration of Secrecy: Mandatory before joining.
- Logistics: Internet facilities provided; interns must arrange their own lodging/boarding and bring personal laptops.
- Attendance: Minimum 85% attendance required (daily in‑out marking for physical internships).
- Submission: Interns must submit a Report/Paper at the end of the internship; presentations may be conducted.
- Certification: Issued upon satisfactory completion and evaluation of the report/paper.
- No Placement Guarantee: Internship does not confer any claim for employment in MNRE or allied organizations.

- Candidates must indicate their area of interest aligned with MNRE’s thrust research areas.
- Applications must be submitted at least one month before the expected joining date and not more than three months in advance.
- No Objection Certificate (NOC): Required from the applicant’s institution/employer at the time of joining.
- Selection: Scrutiny by a Selection Committee; offers subject to slot availability and approval.
- Documents: Original marksheets and NOC must be produced at the time of joining.
