Ratio et Oratio: Understanding the Evolving Role of the Bench and the Bar in Shaping Judgments
An International Panel Discussion Organised by the Xavier Society of Law and Justice (XSLAJ), Xavier Law School (XLS), St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK)
Meaningful legal discourse thrives when academia, the judiciary, and the legal profession come together to exchange ideas, challenge perspectives, and collectively shape the future of justice. Guided by this vision, the Xavier Society of Law and Justice (XSLAJ), established in 2020 under the aegis of Xavier Law School, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, has consistently worked towards promoting excellence in legal education, advocacy, research, and practical legal learning.
Inspired by the Jesuit ideal of Magis and the University’s mission of nurturing socially responsible professionals, XSLAJ has emerged as one of the University’s premier academic bodies. Over the years, the Society has successfully organised several flagship national-level initiatives, including the Xavier Mediation Competition (XMC) and the Ignatius Trial and Advocacy Competition (IGNITAC), while collaborating with leading law firms, chambers, legal organisations, and professionals.
Building upon this distinguished legacy, XSLAJ introduced Vox Legis Xaveriana (VLX) as its flagship panel discussion series to facilitate meaningful interaction between students, academicians, professionals, and eminent members of the Bench and the Bar. Following the overwhelming success of its inaugural edition, XSLAJ proudly presents Vox Legis Xaveriana – Volume II, expanding the initiative into an international academic discourse featuring distinguished legal luminaries from India and across the globe.
“Ratio et Oratio: Understanding the Evolving Role of the Bench and the Bar in Shaping Judgments.”
The administration of justice is a collaborative process, where judicial wisdom and effective advocacy together shape the evolution of jurisprudence. While judges interpret and apply the law, advocates play an equally indispensable role by presenting arguments, developing legal thought, and assisting courts in arriving at reasoned decisions.
Recognising this dynamic relationship, Vox Legis Xaveriana – Volume II seeks to create a platform for thoughtful discussions on judicial reasoning, courtroom advocacy, judgment writing, legal ethics, institutional responsibilities, dispute resolution, and the evolving administration of justice. By bringing together perspectives from different jurisdictions and professional backgrounds, the programme aims to foster comparative learning while encouraging participants to appreciate the complementary roles played by the Bench and the Bar in strengthening the rule of law.
Unlike conventional academic events confined to legal education, the programme has been envisioned as an interdisciplinary platform welcoming participants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds who are interested in understanding the institutions, ideas, and individuals that continue to shape contemporary legal systems.
Following the academic success of Vox Legis Xaveriana – Volume I, the second edition significantly expands the scope of the initiative by bringing together eminent judges, judicial officers, senior advocates, law firm partners, arbitrators, mediators, and legal practitioners representing both national and international jurisdictions.
The programme has been carefully structured into two exclusive panel discussions, enabling participants to understand both institutional perspectives independently while appreciating their interconnected role within the justice delivery system.
Through these discussions, participants will gain valuable comparative insights into judicial decision-making, advocacy, institutional ethics, dispute resolution, and contemporary challenges confronting legal systems across jurisdictions.
