About Organizers:

NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, one of India’s premier law schools, is inviting applications for the position of Consultant (Research) through its flagship initiative, The Square Circle Clinic.

The Square Circle Clinic is a criminal justice initiative with offices in New Delhi, Pune, Nagpur, and Hyderabad. It provides pro bono criminal defense to prisoners sentenced to death and undertrial prisoners, while also conducting ground‑breaking research and public outreach on:

• Forensics and scientific evidence in criminal trials
• Death penalty jurisprudence and sentencing practices
• Criminalisation and punishment in India
• Science, technology, and criminal justice
• Prevention of torture and custodial violence
• Legal aid and access to justice
• Mental health and criminal justice intersections

The Clinic’s staff, formerly part of Project 39A, joined NALSAR in April 2025, bringing with them a legacy of high‑impact research and advocacy in criminal justice reform.

Role & Responsibilities:

The Consultant (Research) will be central to advancing the Clinic’s research agenda. Key responsibilities include:

• Designing and implementing research projects aligned with the Clinic’s focus areas.
• Conducting data collection and fieldwork across jurisdictions.
• Analyzing and synthesizing findings for academic and policy publications.
• Publishing in reputed peer‑reviewed journals and contributing to white papers, reports, and briefs.
• Writing shorter outreach pieces for mainstream media and digital platforms.
• Building collaborations with central and state agencies in the criminal justice system.
• Representing the Clinic at national and international forums.
• Supporting institutional strategy, administration, and long‑term development of the Clinic.

Qualifications & Requirements:

• Undergraduate degree in Law (mandatory).
• LLM degree preferred.
• Familiarity with criminal law and the Indian criminal justice system desirable.
• Minimum two years of work experience preferred.
• Proficiency in English and at least one Indian language.

Compensation:

💰 Rs. 65,000 – 80,000 per month, commensurate with experience.
