The ongoing global tensions around the world is escalating the phenomenon of climate change in a swift manner. Countries waging war against each other does not inflate economy issues alone but also raise the question on life existence in this home. This worsening climate change escalates biodiversity loss, trans-boundary pollution, and ecosystem degradation. The impacts faced due to it demand a transition from reactive measures to enforceable international frameworks. While necessitating the need of global regulations, International Environmental Law plays a vital role in addressing the challenges posed to human existence.
With official global recognition of the term being there since the Stockholm Declaration, 1972, this particular branch of law has shaped the global arena’s view on protection of environment. From foundational principles of state responsibility to multilateral environmental agreements along with the Sustainable Development Goals placed before the table it provides the architecture for cooperation, accountability, and the development of sustainable practices. Now as every country is working towards reaching their individual NDC’s set in the COP 26 meet, the need for a coordinated and collective approach between all the States, international organizations, civil societies, private parties, local communities and each individual is required.
