Micro Small and Medium‑sized Enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of global economies, driving employment, innovation, entrepreneurship, and trade. Yet, they face persistent challenges in accessing affordable and reliable institutional credit. A key barrier lies in traditional lending practices that prioritize immovable property as collateral, while MSMEs often hold movable or intangible assets such as inventory, receivables, and equipment.
UNCITRAL’s legislative work has been pivotal in addressing this mismatch. Instruments such as the UNCITRAL Model Law on Secured Transactions (2016), the UNCITRAL Guide on Access to Credit for MSMEs (2023), and the UNCITRAL‑UNIDROIT Model Law on Warehouse Receipts (2024) provide frameworks for enabling movable and digital assets as collateral. With the rise of electronic warehouse receipts, digital receivables, tokenised assets, and cross‑border trade, the dialogue on secured transactions, trade finance, and dispute resolution has become more urgent and interdisciplinary.
The symposium will explore how modern secured‑transactions frameworks can bridge the MSME financing gap while addressing challenges of digitalisation, cross‑border trade, and evolving commercial collateral. It aims to situate UNCITRAL’s work within broader conversations on MSME finance, trade facilitation, digital commerce, and dispute resolution, with a focus on bankability, enforceability, institutional confidence, and inclusive access to credit.
Research papers are invited from academicians, practitioners, policymakers, industry experts, economists, and students across disciplines including law, economics, banking, finance, management, trade, and public policy.
