CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

Online Two-Day National Workshop on

“Changing Paradigms of Intellectual Property: Opportunities, and the Road Ahead”

Organized by the DPIIT-IPR Chair, National Law Institute University, Bhopal

About the Workshop

India’s intellectual property regime has evolved rapidly with TRIPS-compliant legislation, the National IPR Policy 2016, and initiatives such as Startup India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. Yet significant challenges remain around enforcement, criminal remedies, and effective adjudication from repeat and habitual infringement and sentencing standards to summary trial procedures and the compounding of IP offences. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, synthetic media, and blockchain are further reshaping the contours of infringement and enforcement.

Against this backdrop, the DPIIT-IPR Chair at NLIU Bhopal is organising a two-day national workshop bringing together members of the judiciary, policymakers, practitioners, industry representatives, academicians, and students to deliberate on these pressing questions and chart the road ahead for India’s IP framework.

Objectives

•  Examine the harmonization of India’s IP laws with TRIPS and other international obligations

•  Assess the sentencing framework for IP offences, particularly for repeat and habitual infringers

•  Evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of summary trial procedures in criminal IP cases

•  Identify gaps in India’s criminal IP framework in light of emerging technologies

•  Examine the compounding of IP offences and its impact on deterrence and enforcement

•  Facilitate dialogue among the judiciary, policymakers, industry and academia, culminating in a policy brief

Themes

•  Harmonizing India’s Intellectual Property Framework with International Obligations

•  IP Offences and Repeat Infringers: Rethinking Sentencing and Deterrence

•  Summary Trials and Compounding of IP Offences: Issues in Criminal IP Enforcement

•  Intellectual Property and Emerging Technologies: Challenges for India’s IP Framework

•   Strengthening Institutional and Judicial Capacity for Effective IP Enforcement

Format

The workshop will be held online across four technical sessions  two each day  preceded by an inaugural session with a keynote address, and concluded with a valedictory session.
