About the Organizers Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University (RMLNLU), Lucknow, established in 2006, is committed to advancing quality legal education and fostering legal research, advocacy, and writing. J. Sagar Associates (JSA) is a leading national law firm in India, with expertise across corporate and commercial law, finance, dispute resolution, taxation, regulatory affairs, and intellectual property. The Journal Committee at RMLNLU promotes academic writing and publishes the RMLNLU Law Review, the RMLNLU Journal on CMET Law, and the RMLNLU Law Review Blog.

About the Competition The Journal Committee at RMLNLU, in collaboration with JSA, announces the 14th edition of the RMLNLU International Legal Essay Writing Competition (RILEC) on the theme “Taxation Law.” The competition invites original essays from law students. The top six entries will be shortlisted for an offline conference where authors will present their papers before an expert panel.

Theme and Suggested Sub‑themes

  • Unilateral Digital Taxes vs. Bilateral Treaty Obligations
  • Tax Offenses and Anti‑Avoidance Law in India
  • Retrospective Taxation and Investor‑State Disputes
  • India’s Transfer Pricing Overhaul
  • Startup Taxation and Valuation Disputes
  • GST on Online Marketplaces and OIDAR Services

Eligibility Open to students pursuing 5‑year LL.B. (Hons.), 3‑year LL.B., or LL.M. programmes in India or abroad during the academic year 2026–2027.

Prizes and Entitlements

  • Winner: ₹15,000
  • First Runner‑up: ₹10,000
  • Second Runner‑up: ₹5,000
  • Certificates of Achievement, Merit, and Participation for all qualifying entries
  • Internship opportunities at JSA (discretionary)
  • Publication of top entries on the RMLNLU Law Review Blog and consideration for the RMLNLU Law Review Journal

Important Dates

  • Submission Deadline: October 6, 2026 (11:59 PM IST)
  • Offline Conference: March 2027 (tentative)

Submission Guidelines Essays must be 4,000–5,000 words, formatted in Times New Roman, 12‑point font, 1.5 spacing, and OSCOLA (4th ed.) citation style. Entries must be original, unpublished, and submitted via the official submission form.
