Who Can Apply?:

For Internship Positions

The ICC’s published eligibility guidance generally provides that candidates must either be enrolled in the final year of their university studies or have completed their university studies and possess less than three years of relevant full-time professional experience.

Law students and graduates should carefully review the qualifications, academic background and other requirements specified in each vacancy announcement.

For Visiting Professional Postitions

The Visiting Professional Programme is intended for established professionals with at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification and a minimum of three years of relevant full-time professional experience.

Applicants should select the programme appropriate to their experience and career stage.

Language Requirements:

Candidates generally need good oral communication and drafting skills in at least one of the ICC’s two working languages: English or French. Knowledge of the other working language may be an advantage.

Additional language skills may also be beneficial, depending on the position.

Duration and Work Arrangement:

  • Internship duration: Generally three to six months.
  • Visiting Professional duration: Generally one to six months.
  • Work arrangement: In-person, full-time work at the ICC headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands.

Selected candidates should be prepared to relocate for the duration of the placement.

Is the Internship Paid?:

Please read this carefully before applying.

The ICC does not remunerate most internship and visiting professional placements and generally does not reimburse participants’ placement-related expenses.

However, certain opportunities may receive financial support through the ICC’s Trust Fund for the Development of Interns and Visiting Professionals or through a European Union contribution.

Candidates seeking financial assistance should specifically look for vacancies advertised as funded and check the applicable eligibility conditions. Do not assume that every ICC internship is paid.

How to Apply?:

Interested candidates should follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official ICC internship and visiting professional opportunities page.
  2. Review the available vacancies and select a suitable position.
  3. Read the vacancy announcement carefully, including eligibility criteria, responsibilities and the application deadline.
  4. Register on the ICC’s recruitment portal and complete your candidate profile.
  5. Submit your application online through the official recruitment system, following the instructions for the selected vacancy.

The ICC does not accept applications by email in place of applications submitted through its recruitment portal.

Application Deadline:

There is no single deadline applicable to every ICC internship or visiting professional opportunity. The official careers portal currently displays multiple vacancies with deadlines listed as 31 December 2026. Candidates must verify the deadline and current status of their chosen vacancy before applying.

Please also note that the ICC uses The Hague local time to determine whether an application deadline has passed.

Why Should Law Students Explore This Opportunity?:

An opportunity at the ICC can help eligible candidates develop their understanding of international criminal law, judicial institutions, legal research and international justice. It may be particularly relevant to students interested in international criminal law, human rights, victims’ rights, criminal litigation and comparative legal systems.

Students should apply only after checking the position-specific eligibility criteria and considering the financial and relocation requirements.

Disclaimer: This information is intended to help students discover international opportunities. Vacancies, deadlines, eligibility criteria and funding arrangements may change. The official ICC website and the relevant vacancy announcement shall prevail.
