Concept Note

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has reshaped higher education, legal practice, and academic research. The emergence of AI generative tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and other research platforms has created unique opportunities for legal educators to enhance their teaching methodologies, improve research productivity, and develop innovative learning experiences for students. At the same time, the growing use of AI in academic environments raises important concerns relating to academic integrity, authorship, plagiarism, data privacy, too much reliance on AI-generated content, and responsible use of technology.

Legal education is not untouched by the evolving technological ecosystem. Law teachers are expected not only to understand the implications of AI for the legal profession and justice delivery systems but also to integrate AI tools responsibly into teaching, curriculum development, legal research, and scholarly writing. As future lawyers, judges, policymakers, and academics increasingly engage with AI-driven technologies, legal educators must be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to guide students in navigating this emerging field.

Against this backdrop, the proposed workshop seeks to provide law teachers and law students with a comprehensive understanding of the application of AI in legal education and research, and the ethical and professional responsibilities associated with its use.

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

The workshop aims to:

1. Explore the transformative role of AI in legal education and teaching pedagogy.
2. Demonstrate the use of AI tools for legal research, academic writing and case analysis.
3. Examine legal, ethical, and regulatory issues associated with AI, including privacy, bias, accountability, and transparency.
4. Promote responsible and ethical use of AI in academic and legal research.
5. Strengthen awareness regarding academic integrity, plagiarism, citation practices, and disclosure requirements in AI-assisted research.
6. Encourage participants to formulate institutional best practices for the responsible integration of AI in legal education.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will:

• Develop a comprehensive understanding of AI applications in legal education and legal research.

Session I: For Students

Hands-on Session: AI-Assisted Contract Drafting

Topics include:

• Responsible and ethical use of AI in the legal profession.
• Basics of prompt engineering for legal drafting.
• Drafting Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), employment agreements, and commercial contracts using AI tools.
• Reviewing, refining, and analysing contractual clauses using AI.
• Identifying limitations and risks associated with AI-assisted legal drafting.
• Best practices for human oversight in AI-generated legal documents.

Session II: For Faculty

Institutional Integration of AI in Legal Education

Topics include:

• AI-enabled curriculum development and innovative teaching methodologies.
• AI-assisted lesson planning, assessment, and classroom engagement strategies.
• Applications of AI in legal research, academic writing, and scholarly publication.
• Responsible use of AI in teaching, evaluation, and research supervision.
• Developing institutional policies and best practices for AI integration in legal academia.
