The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru invites applications for one full-time Research position to work on Criminal Justice Projects. This is a contractual role for a period of one year, based in Bengaluru.

About the Project:

NLSIU is undertaking cutting-edge research projects involving empirical analysis of criminal justice issues. Using public legal data, the projects aim to study the process and decision-making of judicial institutions.

One of the flagship projects will employ natural language processing (NLP) tools to mine data embedded in judgments and orders, addressing major research questions related to criminal justice outcomes in India.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Sentencing patterns
  • Undertrial incarceration
  • Bail decisions
  • Influence of social groups and regional disparities

By creating a publicly accessible dataset of case decisions and hearings, the project seeks to facilitate wide-ranging research on legal and social issues, benefiting stakeholders interested in legal reforms in India.

Role Description:

The Researcher will work under the supervision of faculty members:

  • Prof. Mrinal Satish
  • Prof. Aparna Chandra
  • Prof. Rahul Hemrajani
  • Prof. Nikita Ahalyan

Responsibilities include:

  • Navigating the eCourts platform to document structural elements of the Indian legal system
  • Hand-coding cases to develop a robust training dataset
  • Analysing judicial decisions to extract and synthesise data
  • Assisting in the development of a legal database and open data portal
  • Conducting research on judicial performance metrics (sentencing, bail decisions)
  • Preparing documentation, reports, and presentations for dissemination
  • Collaborating in project meetings and supporting administrative tasks
  • Contributing to reports and academic papers related to the project

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • LL.B degree OR Master’s degree in an allied discipline
  • Demonstrated training/experience in coding and analysing large government datasets

Desirable:

  • Relevant research experience
  • Experience in empirical legal research
  • Prior exposure to coding or statistical analysis

Experience:

Essential:

  • 0–5 years of work experience in academic or professional settings
  • Demonstrable evidence of research and writing ability
