The Young Experts Program of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a brand-new effort focused at developing the next generation of intellectual property leaders. The WIPO-hosted two-year programme aims to introduce young individuals with high potential, mostly from developing and least developed countries, as well as nations in transition, to the technical and policy elements of intellectual property. The programme intends to prepare them for leadership roles in their home nations’ and regions’ innovation and creative ecosystems.

Context of the Organization

YEP assignments will be distributed throughout WIPO, with the majority consisting of a one-year technical assignment followed by a one-year development assignment.

The selected Young Experts will be assigned to assignments based on their profile and declared interest, as well as the organization’s needs and goals.

Lines of Reporting

The Young Expert will be assigned a direct supervisor and will be supervised by the relevant Sector Lead in general.

Working Relationships

The Young Expert will collaborate with colleagues in WIPO’s Divisions and Departments, as well as external partners.

WIPO is launching a Young Experts Program (YEP) to train the next generation of global IP leaders to assist in the development of global innovation ecosystems. Young and bright individuals will be groomed over the course of this two-year programme to not only learn the technical components of IP, but also to use them in practise in order to make an effect in their countries and regions.

The Program’s One-of-a-Kind On-the-Job Training: You will learn about intellectual property (IP) and the role of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in fostering innovation and creativity for the benefit of all. The programme is delivered in a blended learning manner that includes on-the-job training as well as academic study through our WIPO Academy.

Mentoring and guidance: You will be allocated mentors as part of the programme to assist you develop your management and administrative abilities and advance your career. From the beginning, you will be exposed to exciting and important initiatives that will push and grow you.

As a member of the YEP group, you will have frequent opportunities to network with WIPO’s top and senior leaders. After completing your programme, you will join a lively network of future global IP leaders who will contribute to the growth of the global IP ecosystem.


Work on pressing issues: YEP professionals will work on important and impactful projects and assignments that address global issues such as climate change, as well as the use of intellectual property, innovation, and creativity to address these issues.

Global community: YEP selectees will be welcomed from all over the world and will have the opportunity to learn from one another as well as work in an international agency with employees from over 120 nations. You will extend your horizons and enrich your professional viewpoint as a Young Expert.


Professional experience: YEP trainees will get a firsthand look at diplomacy and multilateralism, learning how to overcome divides and reach an agreement. The young professionals will serve as part of the WIPO secretariat, offering data, rigorous analysis, and other support to Member State delegates as they negotiate to improve the global IP system.

Eligibility

  • Must be 35 years old or younger at the time of application.
  • Must be available to participate in the two-year program 2022-2023 and explicitly confirm this in their application.
  • Must express interest in one to three YEP assignments listed under section 2 (Click here for more information on the Assignments).
  • Must meet at least the essential requirements for their selected YEP assignments in addition to at least the essential requirements listed below.
  • Experience (Essential): At least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience (Desirable)
    • Experience in the area of Intellectual Property.
    • Experience in project management.
  • Language (Essential): Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
  • Language (Desirable): Knowledge of any other United Nations official languages.

YEP Advantages
Monthly salary: 5000 Swiss francs (CHF) [INR 4 lacs].
During the training, WIPO provides medical and accident insurance coverage.
There will be a contribution to travel expenses. WIPO may be able to assist you in acquiring a visa to enter Switzerland if necessary.
