The Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki, Finland is the leading Finnish institute of legal education. Some of the degrees awarded by the Faculty are completed at its bilingual Vaasa Unit of Legal Studies. The Faculty’s mission is to train qualified, ethically responsible legal professionals for both the Finnish and international markets through research of an international standard and research-based teaching. The Faculty offers undergraduate degrees in Finnish, Swedish and English as well as a bilingual degree in Swedish and Finnish. The Faculty has a teaching and research staff of around 120 people and 2,400 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

  • Requirements for the position and assessment of qualifications:
    • According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to the position of postdoctoral researcher shall hold a relevant doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills necessary for the position. PhD diploma is to be acquired by the first day of employment. A PhD in Law is not a strict requirement, but an understanding of law (demonstrated e.g. through degrees or courses in law) is important. Further to this, knowledge of fields relevant for the applicant’s subproject is an asset. The appointee is expected to have the ability to conduct independent academic research and possess the teaching skills required for the position. The working language of the project is English. The period following the completion of doctoral degree must not exceed five years, excluding family leave and equivalent periods of absence. An appointee must be able to provide a clear contribution to the theme of the research project and to its general development, together with full-time researchers, visiting scholars, Ph.D. students, and students working as research assistants.
    • To fulfil the research requirements of the position, the appointee is expected to live in Helsinki, be physically present on a regular basis and participate actively in the research and teaching activities of the research project. The appointee is expected to develop their own and the project’s common research agenda, and contribute to collective academic tasks such as teaching, seminars and joint academic papers. Postdoctoral researchers have a teaching load of 5%, corresponding roughly with a course of 20 hours contact teaching.
  •  Salary for the position: It will be based on level 5 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The annual gross salary is €42,0

    • A curriculum vitae A free form report (max. 3 pages) describing the applicant’s research activities, such as activities in the scholarly community, success in obtaining research funding and international research experience (for example university portfolio).
    • A list of publications, numbered, with top five (at the most) key publications marked in bold to be considered during the review. Forthcoming publications and an unpublished dissertation may also be included. A (preliminary) research plan (max 3 pages) outlining how the applicant’s expertise could contribute to the research project.  
    • Other attachments, including letters of recommendation or certificates, are not required at this point.
    • If the candidate has not yet acquired their doctoral degree, they should describe in the application letter their plan for the submission and defence of their PhD dissertation, and the envisaged time by which the PhD degree will be awarded.
