In India, criminal trials are governed by the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973, which is based on the accusatorial system. The police force is the most vital component of the criminal justice system. The primary goals of the police are to give prompt assistance to victims, to take preventive measures, to apprehend the accused, to investigate the crime fairly, and to enforce and maintain law and order. The police investigation is the backbone of the criminal justice system; we cannot expect fair justice unless the police conduct a fair and honest investigation.
