The WTO Chairs Programme, initiated by the World Trade Organization (WTO), is a crucial academic initiative designed to advance research, education, and outreach related to international trade and the functions of the WTO. This program strives to deepen the understanding of global trade issues, particularly in developing countries, and bridge the gap between academic research and real world trade policy. Under the WTO Chairs Programme, participating academic institutions and scholars receive support for research projects, enabling the examination of key trade-related topics. It also encourages the development of courses and teaching materials related to international trade and WTO matters, thereby enhancing the quality of education and training. This program, established in collaboration with select academic institutions worldwide, serves as a conduit for a multifaceted approach to understanding and engaging with global trade dynamics.   

The Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL) was established to serve as a center of excellence in the field of international trade and investment law. It was officially inaugurated in 2016. CTIL’s establishment was a significant milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen its engagement with the global trading system and enhance its understanding of international trade and investment laws. CTIL is a prestigious institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It serves as a vital hub for research, policy analysis, and capacity-building activities in the domains of international trade, investment, and related legal matters.

Established in 1997, National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU) is one of the premier law institutions in India. The university has been ranked 3rd amongst India’s Best Law Schools 2022 by India Today.
Led by some of the leading minds in academia, including the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) S. Surya Prakash and the Registrar, Mr. Vivek Bakshi, NLIU has consistently fostered strong partnerships in order to fortify its integration with national and international legal fraternities. 

The NLIU International Trade Law Journal is a journal of the National Law Institute University, Bhopal envisioned to foster an interdisciplinary platform for rich discourse on International Trade Law, the Journal invites path-breaking and innovative insights from students, practitioners, academicians, and jurists. 
Prof. (Dr.) Monica Raje serves as the faculty coordinator of the journal. With experience spanning two decades in the field of International Trade Law, Intellectual Property Law, and Corporate Law, the journal continues to flourish under her constant guidance.

What Are The Details Of The Course?

  • Course Title: International Trade Law
  • Objective: The primary objective of this course is to broaden participants’ understanding of concepts of trade law essential for navigating and resolving trade-related legal issues, through a perfect blend of theoretical knowledge, from experts in the field, and practical skills, acquired through carefully simulated mock exercises. This course aims to furnish students with a comprehensive grasp of International Trade Law within the Indian legal context, alongside insights into the workings of international trade agreements governing trade and services. Furthermore, the course will delve into the intricacies of dispute resolution in international trade.
  • Date: 2nd-4th March 2024
  • Course Details: The Certificate Course is being held from 2 to 4 March 2024, running for a total of 16 hours, and will include foundational sessions on international trade law and expert panel discussions on subsidies and non-trade issues, both topics of great contemporary relevance. Among other subjects, the Certificate Course will focus on the fundamentals of trade law, intellectual property rights, WTO dispute settlement, trade remedies, international investment law, trade in services, non-tariff barriers, and trade and sustainability.
