About Organization: –

Rural Litigation Entitlement Kendra (RLEK) is a Non-Governmental Oraganisation who strides towards the development amongst tribal hill communities in the areas of Dehradun district. The Kendra has evolved after years of struggle against atrocities meted out to underprivileged and marginalized communities. Systemic inequities and injustices deprived these communities of their fundamental human rights the main thrust being empowerment and emancipation of bonded labour (also called slavery), with special focus on women. This was crucial in their effort for restoration of rights of these marginalized communities specifically Van Gujjars. Not only this but also their efforts resulted into the passing of various enactments such as – Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976; Environment Protection Act, 1986; and Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988.

Duration of the Internship:

15th May- 15th June’ 2015 (4 weeks with 6 days working)

Timing:

10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Main Task Work Profile:

There was no hard and fast work profile to which the interns were expected to stick to, rather it provided opportunities among many spheres ranging from field work to research work to presentations and tool making.

  1. Field work – the interns went to the deras (houses) of the Van Gujjars ( a tribe) to know about their lifestyle, their struggle for their rights and to a school run by RLEK where children of Van Gujjars studied. Any interns too went for personal interviews of the ward members and the problems that they are facing in their ward. I also went to Dehradun District Court to ask people about what difficulty they face in getting their domicile certificates made and what is the procedure that they follow.
  2. Many students who were creatively sound contributed in tool making such as games, posters, printed bed sheets and cards. These tools were used by RLEK for educating women and children in the rural areas.
  3. We also participated in the rally that was conducted by RLEK on the occasion of Environment Day on 5th June and also created scripts and acts on women empowerment which we performed in nearby villages.
  4. Interns also made powerpoint presentations on burning issues and gave their suggestions.
  5. The organization also organized certain workshops headed by psychologists and other social workers.
  6. Typing and Translating work– In RLEK You will surely get a task related to Typing the material or to translate the same In English to hindi and vice-versa.

Work Environment at office:

Work environment is highly pleasant and homely and to summarise it one can say a place where you work and learn.

Stipend: None

First day at organization:

First day was full of formalities where the intern fills a form, submits the bonafide certificate and 2 passport size photographs. The Chairman, Mr. Avdash Kaushal gives the lecture and tells about the organisation and Internship Coordinator introduces the organisation.

Best Part of Internship:

The best part of the internship was getting exposed to the real world difficulties and contributing towards their settlement. The homely environment catalyses every intern to work and enjoy the work being given.

Not only this the leechis in the garden were the best part throughout.

Biggest Lesson:

The biggest lesson for me was how to work with people of different temperaments and behaviour and produce a fruitful output.

Anything else you’d like to tell:

The NGO also provides accommodation services for outstation interns and lovely food also for some charges, about which I m not aware since I was from Dehradun.

Any Message to other Law Students:

The basic to great working integrated learning experience at RLEK is your devotion. You ask for work you get work and so do a lengthy certificate, elaborating all your contributions.
