The involvement of business is required for society to accomplish its broad aims of a sustainable future. Professor Beate Sjfjell analyses the failure of law to ensure a sustainable business in her speech.

Professor Sjfjell outlines recent developments in the European Union, demonstrating how the regulatory framework for sustainable business is still evolving – and, based on extensive research from several international research projects, how law can become a key piece of the sustainable business jigsaw puzzle.

Regarding the Speaker

Beate Sjfjell is an Adjunct Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Faculty of Economics and Management, and a Professor of Law at the University of Oslo, Faculty of Law. She is also a Visiting Professor at the European Legal Studies Department of the College of Europe.

Professor Sjfjell is the creator and director of the Oslo Faculty’s Research Group Companies, Markets, and Sustainability (the Company Law Group), which is currently in its second period (2017-2022), as well as a number of worldwide networks and projects.

The Cambridge Handbook of Corporate Law, Corporate Governance and Sustainability (co-edited with Christopher M. Bruner; Cambridge University Press 2019), and Creating Corporate Sustainability are some of her most recent books. Company Law and Sustainability: Legal Barriers and Opportunities (co-edited with Irene Lynch Fannon; Cambridge University Press 2018), and Gender as an Agent of Change (co-edited with Irene Lynch Fannon; Cambridge University Press 2018). (co-edited with Benjamin J. Richardson; Cambridge University Press 2015). SSRN hosts a number of her research articles.
