Author: Rohit Mahawar, Law Student
All aspects of a person’s life are negatively affected by the use of drugs, it not only affects on that person but also affects their family, friends and people living in that society or community and even places an enormous burden on society. The connection between alcohol, drugs and crime are the most significant areas of risk.
Alcohol and drugs are implicated in an estimated 58% of offenses leading to incarceration in the country such as domestic violence, driving while intoxicated, drug offenses, and public-order offenses. Alcohol is day by day ruining the life of youth of our country.
The Global Information System on Alcohol and Health (GISAH) is an essential tool for assessing and monitoring the health situation and trends related to alcohol consumption, alcohol-related harm, and policy responses in countries.
The relationship between drugs and crime is complex, and the question is whether use of drug leads people to commit some criminal offense or whether people consuming drugs are already predisposed to such activity.
However, at the most intense levels of drug use, drugs and crime are directly and highly correlated and serious drug use can amplify and perpetuate preexisting criminal activity.
DRUG RELATED CRIME: NCRB REPORT (PUNJAB):-
Punjab in India is recorded as the highest drug related crime state in the country, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2013, it had the highest number of people booked under the Narcotics Drug and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985. The Act includes activities related to production, preparation, manufacturing or illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances not limited to opium, cannabis, pseudoephedrine, poppy husk, heroin and so on.
Approximately 14,564 people are booked are booked under this act, this is the worst condition of Punjab among all the states and union territories.
The report has also revealed that Punjab has the highest average of drug abuse[1] among youth at 51.6%. It is 18 times more than the national average of 2.8%.
Use of drugs and alcohol is increasing at a very fast rate in our country, especially the youth of the country is most attracted towards it, because some of the highly damaging drugs are cheap in rate and easily available in the country. We have to stop this use of drugs but unless these drugs are stopped from getting imported from other countries is not possible. These drugs are also used in making medicines and it is illegal to make them available to people without prescription. Students who get addicted to such drugs and alcohol ruin their life as well as the future of the country
Therefore, we have to generate awareness against consumption of drugs and alcohol.
