The Department of Law, SDU offers a traditional degree in law alongside a combined HA (jur)/MSc (Econ) course. The traditional law degree is offered both as a fulltime and as a part-time course. In addition, the department is responsible for teaching in other legal subjects offered at SDU. To satisfy its aim of offering research-based courses, the department has a broad research profile and covers all areas of the law. In addition to the broad based research in the principal fields of the law, the department is working on a number of focus areas with a strong research profile. Current focus areas are: Cross-national exercise of legal majority, market activity in the public sphere and regulation of financial business and activity. Dialogue and cooperation with its social environment are important for the department, and it is open to any form of knowledge exchange and collaboration.

The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is a university in Denmark that has campuses located in Southern Denmark and on Zealand. The university offers a number of joint programmes in co-operation with the University of Flensburg and the University of Kiel. Contacts with regional industries and the international scientific community are strong. With its 29,674 enrolled students (as of 2016), the university is both the third-largest and, given its roots in Odense University, the third-oldest Danish university (fourth if one includes the Technical University of Denmark).

Deadline for applications is 2 January 2024 for a postdoctoral researcher position at the Department of Law, University of Southern Denmark. The selected candidate will be a part of an interdisciplinary group of researchers all connected to the research project “SDU Maritime Research Platform (MRP)”, and deal with legal and regulatory aspects including particularly aspects of how the maritime industry is active in the co-creation of rules and other legal frameworks relevant to it.

  • Work Location: The work address will be the Department of Law, Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark, Campusvej 55, 5230 Odense M, Denmark.
  • Eligibility: We expect you to
    • have a PhD degree in law or a cross-disciplinary PhD which includes law
    • have an interest in maritime law and in the interaction between law and politics
    • want to participate in cross-disciplinary research collaborations
    • be curious, inventive and in possession of good interpersonal skills
    • be able to define a relevant and ambitious research question
    • It will be an advantage if you have working knowledge of one of the Scandinavian languages as some of the sources you will be dealing with will be in Danish.
    • Records of published research prior to the application may be regarded as an advantage, and experience outside of legal research may be considered relevant for candidates’ applications. However, the combined contents of the application, enthusiasm and determination of the candidate will also be taken into consideration in order to find the best match for the position/team.
  • Terms of employment            
    • The appointment is made in accordance with the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities as well as the circular on the Collective Agreement for Academics Employed by the State.

    • The position is fixed-term and is two years of duration.
  • Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the postdoc at the Department of Law for this call will typically include the following tasks:
    • Publish scientific results internationally, both individually and co-authored
    • Make yourself and your knowledge available to others by engaging in various knowledge exchange activities both inside and outside the university
    • Build relations to and cooperate with external stakeholders
    • Undertake administrative tasks related to your research
    • The postdoc position may involve limited teaching obligations – however, only after agreement with the main supervisor.

  • When the deadline for submitting applications is met, a number of applications are selected (shortlisted) for an academic evaluation, based on an overall assessment of which of the applicants based on their professional and research profile match the job description the best.
  • The shortlisted applications will then be assessed by an evaluation committee. Thereafter, a number of applicants are invited to a job interview.
