South Asian Conference on Statelessness

Statelessness is a profound violation of human rights of an individual and remains to be one of the most pressing humanitarian issues of the twenty-first century. Article 15 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights clearly states that
- “Everyone has the right to a nationality” and that
- “No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality..”
Despite this guarantee, people in all parts of the world face the prospect of living without a nationality or citizenship. The exact number of stateless people is still unknown, but UNHCR estimates that there are at least 12 million stateless globally. In 2014, the UNHCR announced its Campaign to end Statelessness in ten years. The same year, the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion reported that more people in Asia and the Pacific are affected by statelessness than in any other region of the world.
Centre for Statelessness and Refugee Studies under the School of Law, Rights and Constitutional Governance (SCLRG), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai is hosting the first of its kind ‘South Asian Conference on Statelessness’ with the aim of increasing research and focus on the nameless faces suffering due of lack of citizenship or nationality. We are looking for contributions from academicians, graduate students, humanitarian workers, legal experts, and independent researchers who have been working on issues related to statelessness and allied themes.
The papers could be focused around the following themes:
- Understanding Statelessness: Global and Regional Perspectives
- Causes and consequences of Statelessness.
- Identification and Mapping parameters of the Stateless persons in the region.
- Epistemology, Ontology and Research Frameworks pertaining to Statelessness.
- Contextualising International Laws/Conventions, Legal frameworks and Policies for South-Asia.
- Status of Stateless Women & Children.
- Human Rights and Statelessness.
- Role of the Academia/ Government/ United Nations and other International & National Organizations, NGO etc. in Identifying, Mapping and Ending Statelessness in South-Asia.
- Statelessness and Inclusive Policy.
The conference will be held on July 07-08, 2017 in TISS, Mumbai. Questions can be directed to: sacs.tiss@gmail.com. Proposals/Abstracts should not be more than 300 words with a title, institutional affiliation and contact details.

Full Papers to be Submitted by: 30th June, 2017
