Deadline: on or before Nov. 06, 2016.

For your kind reference, short details of the program are as follows:

Symbiosis Law School, NOIDA has organised a Seminar on ‘Business and Human Rights’ on November 07, 2016 by Mr. Kevin Smith. The timings are 12:30pm – 02:00pm.

OVERVIEW

“Human rights law” has long been the responsibility of states. However, we only need to look at the headlines, from Bhopal to Rana Plaza, to see how businesses can and do have an impact on human rights through their activities. What are the obligations of businesses in relation to human rights? Where are these set out, and how can they be enforced? How can businesses make amends when they are shown to, or believe they may have, negatively impacted the human rights of their stakeholders?

These questions are the subject of considerable ongoing debate, and they raise critical issues for lawyers, both as advisors to businesses and in the context of managing their own firms. Doing “the right thing” need not carry a financial cost, though: rather, for lawyers and businesspeople alike, a knowledge of this subject area can be a valuable commercial asset: there is a compelling “business case” for business and human rights.

This lecture is aimed at any students interested in commercial law, human rights, or the intersection and relationship between the two.

LECTURE OUTLINE

The Seminar will consist of three parts:

  1. a brief history and background to the “Three Pillar Framework” and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights;
  2. a discussion of the Three Pillars and the Guiding Principles, including a focus on current trends in the area and the obligation to provide remedy and a discussion of relevant case studies; and
  3. an argument for the “business case” for Business and Human Rights, and an explanation of why every commercial lawyer ought to know about this.

ABOUT THE RESOURCE PERSON
